Hello! Tell us about FAUSTINE?
FAUSTINE is a one-act, dark comedy play that explores gender bias in medical research, endometriosis and female pain, and asks how far is too far to fight for your cause. Then throw in an immigration attorney from Hell, a possessed Alexa, and a demonic set of dead feminists, and prepare to indulge in the sweet capabilities of mighty Lucifer*. *Subject to signing the Devil’s Contract. It’s Marlowe’s Faustus, but make him female and on the verge of freeing womankind.
How did you come up with the name of your show that your taking to the Camden fringe?
To link our modern to Marlowe’s original, we decided on the name Faustine. It’s a feminine form of Faust, so a perfect link to the 1592 play. It also means “good fortune” but you’d have to see the show to decide whether Faustine is fortunate or not…
Tell us a little bit about your style of show?
We like to think of it as the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina meets Fleabag – with a dash of This Is Going To Hurt.
One moment you’ll be impassioned to research endometriosis, the next you’ll sniggering at Bridget Jones knickers, and before you know it, you’ll be fearing for your eternal soul.
Our script is fast paced, banterous and not afraid to look audience members in the eye and ask “is the secret power of femininity the monthly bout of the shits?”
What will your set be about?
We like to keep it simple. Faustine is a student after all, so our set has the standard mix-matched furniture you’d find in any womb-obsessed, saviour of womankind, PhD student’s flat.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
All That Glitters at the Rosemary Branch Theatre by Made You Look Productions. We love a feminine exploration of body confidence set to a 00’s soundtrack. Though it is on at the same time as Faustine, so maybe book both shows on different nights!
Have you done the fringe before? What have been some of your favourite shows to date and why?
We are new to Camden Fringe! Which is very exciting.
What advice would you give to others who want to perform at Camden Fringe next year?
Find the right venue. There are so many fabulous clubs, theatres, pubs/theatres, involved that you can waste a lot of energy applying to venues that don’t fit your style. You want somewhere who will value your artform and support you all the way.
What is the best thing about performing at the Camden fringe?
There’s nothing like a fringe festival. Creativity buzzes in the air and every crook and cranny of London is packed full of new talent and entertainment. It’s so exciting to know our little show will be part of something incredible.
London can be an expensive place to perform in – what key advice would you give to performers that is a sort of life hack?
Anywhere can be a rehearsal space if you try hard enough.
What are your three favourite things about Camden?
A pair of watermelon earrings I bought there in 2013.
The World’s End pub.
And the bloody Camden Fringe, of course!
Favourite one liner you have done in a show and why?
“If Adam had eaten the apple, he’d have gotten a slap on the wrist and pay rise.”
Need Faustine say more?
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
Someone with a big laugh and a big heart.
The iconic image of the Camden Fringe is the Pigeon – if you could call this years pigeon a name to represent its style what would it be and why?
Samuel Peckett – Waiting For Garbage
This year’s pigeon is giving bleak tragicomedy vibes and, clearly, cold chips are his Endgame.
