Hello! Tell us about yourself?
I’m Sam Burkett (thy/them), and I’m a choreographer and comedian who makes theatre! I enjoy making a big deal out of small moments, so I try to make work that reflects the feelings and conflicts of everyday life as a queer person. My work has been shown across the UK and in the US, and my solo, Crop Tops Make Me Feel Vulnerable won the Best of Anything Goes Award at the 2018 Houston Fringe Festival in Texas.
How did you come up with the name of your show that your taking to the fringe?
I liked the double meaning of a greeting and telling someone that they are actually only okay.
Tell us all about your show!
“You’re Alright” is a new dance-comedy which combines comedy, contemporary dance, and a splash of physical theatre to take you on the journey of a night out gone awry. It follows the story of recently unemployed, 20 something, Charlie, who’s planning a night out with her best mate, Andy. Unfortunately, Andy’s running late, so Charlie’s stuck with his annoying boyfriend until he arrives. “You’re Alright” is a night out of high energy, queer fun with a hilarious and relatable story about queer friendship, growth, and accepting that maybe you were the one being a d*ckhead.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
I’m excited to see my friend Miztli Rose’s show about cults and wellness called Cult Classick at the Lion & Unicorn Theatre on the 14th & 15th of August at 18:00!
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
This is my first Fringe! The best piece of advice I’ve received is to plan ahead, but stay flexible!
London can be an expensive place to perform in – what key advice would you give to performers that is a sort of life hack?
There are so many different rehearsal space schemes that are available. Look outside of your own bubble, and you might be surprised at the cheap spaces you can find!
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
It’s a really great place to experiment with your work and take risks!
The most challenging thing about performing at the fringe?
Definitely marketing! With so many great shows, it takes a lot of work to stand out and let people know about your show!
The iconic image of the Camden Fringe is the Pigeon – if you could call this years pigeon a name to represent its style what would it be and why?
I think I would call it Dame Pigeon Dench because it looks like it has done a lot of Shakespeare but has also been in the musical Cats.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
I am on instagram @samburkettdance
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Silly! Queer! Dance!
