Hello Tell us about yourself?
I am a stand up comic from Newcastle-upon-Tyne and have been working professionally as a comedian since 2019. I have supported Alan Carr, Tom Allen and Jason Manford on their nationwide tours around the UK and Ireland. I have appeared on Comedy Central Live! as well as writing and acting in Channel 4’s Original Comedy Shorts on three sketches, one of which went on to receive over 5 million views.
In 2020 I was nominated for Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year and the following year nominated for Leicester Comedy Festival’s Best Festival Appearance. I am now a regular at clubs up and down the country including Glee Clubs, Komedia and The Stand. In 2019 I also presented a weekly comedy show on BBC Radio Newcastle and went on to be nominated for a Gillard Award in 2020 for Newcomer of the Year.
How did you come up with your name?
I wanted to sum up my ridiculous life. I asked a few friends if my life had been chaotic enough to warrant that title and they just laughed and assured me it still is.
Tell us about your show?
Feral is about class, chaos and coming out. Through a number of chaotic life experiences the show delves into what it means to be an unpalatable type of working class, navigating the edges of poverty, mental illness and how easy it is to fall through the cracks. Whilst vulnerable, it’s equally warm and joyful, turning a Geordie lens on lesbian culture and my relationship with my Turkishside. It is an upbeat look at dysfunction, haphazard living and feeling out of place in the arts.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Lindsey Santoro is absolutely hysterical I can’t wait to see her show.
Have you done the fringe before? Advice?
I’ve done it once before as a split hour. I do have fun in small doses but a full month is proper overwhelming I find. The ideal thing would be to sit in a sensory deprivation tank for a few hours a day but it’s a bit out of my budget so I suppose I’ll make do with a paddling pool.
What have been some of the most unique and different comedy shows you have seen this year and why?
I haven’t had time to see any yet, even work in progresses – I’m looing forward to seeing everyone’s up there !
Talk us through your daily routine at the fringe?
I can’t even remember what I did the first time I went up – I think I just sat around stressed out eating Twiglets until it was time to do something. I’m deffo going to be more proactive this year, probably find a body of water to jump into – for exercise reasons not out of despair!
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?
I’m not into the busyness so just find a quieter spot somewhere, or get out of town or just leave the country … I am being too cynical, the best thing I find is seeing a show that is different to what I do and also there is a hotdog stand and I had a veggie hotdog with sauerkraut from there last year and it was so good I haven’t been the same since.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
Getting to do my own show is proper exciting, having the space and the full hour to perform what I want for the first time is mint.
The most challenging thing about the fringe?
Just the slog of it and the worry the hotdog stand from last year might not come back.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the Fringe?
Multiple shoes – I remember shoes breaking in 2019 from all the walking. Ear plugs as one night I was woken up by Italian children crying outside my window which I’ve never got to the bottom of. Probably something obvious like vitamins last year I visited for the last few days and everyone looked like a haunted zombie.
Secret to successful flyering?
Absolutely no idea, I’ve heard it’s to target people who look like they might like you but anyone who’s performed stand up knows that it’s impossible to know. There’s no point asking me to be honest in 2019 I was handing people flyers and then warning them they might not like it.
Who would be your ultimate audience member?
Just that lush combination of receptive, down to earth, listening but upbeat and in a good mood. That’s the best combo.
Where can people follow you?
Follow me on insta @louiseyoungcomedy. I’ve also got a podcast out called Make Me Better where you can hear my ramblings on a weekly basis. Insta @makemebetterpod
Finally in three words why people should come along?
Well why not
