Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Hi! My name is Laura Ramoso, I’m an Italian-German sketch comedian living in Toronto, Canada. I was born in Legnago, Italy and moved to Douala, Cameroon shortly after due to my mom’s work with the World Health Organization. Following 17 years of growing up abroad through Azerbaijan, China, and Vietnam, I relocated to Canada in 2013 to get one of thos ine North American college degrees just like in the m byovies. I make sketch and character comedy videos for Instagram and TikTok (1mill+ followers) and perform my new live show, FRANCES, on stages across Canada (and shortly, on one stage in Edinburgh!).
How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the fringe?
The main character in the show is called Frances, and it’s a name I’ve always loved.
Tell us all about your show!
Featuring some of my most popular characters like Italian Dad, German Mom and the Three Girls Who Just Got Back From Europe, FRANCES tells a painfully relatable story about love and loss through our main character’s journey to meet up with her ex-boyfriend after he’s asked her to “talk”.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
So many! I’d love to catch as much comedy as I can. Here are a few on my list currently: Tatty Macleod: Fugue, Grace Campbell: A Show About More Me(n), and St. Doctor’s Hospital.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
I’ve never done the fringe! I can’t wait! It sounds like it’ll be fun, overwhelming, and crazy all at once. I’ve been told to just LEAN IN and do as much as I can, see as many shows as possible, and meet tons of people. I’ve also been told to make sure I carve time out to…sleep. I think it’s going to be an experience I’ll never forget.
Favourite one liner you have done in a show and why?
“Ever since getting back from my trip to Australia, this sunburn is my jacket.”
What have been some of the most unique and different comedy shows you have seen this year and why?
Seeing Matteo Lane do stand-up in Toronto! He is a masterclass in comedy and so genu ininely kind and charming.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
This is my hope: wake up, coffee, see shows, eat way too much good food, see shows, meet 10,000 new people, do my show, and then meet 10,000 more new people. Repeat!
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?
While I’ve never done the fringe, I think it’ll be important to stay open to all the new people and experiences, and try to see as much as possible.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
I imagine my audiences are going to be so varied because everyone’s coming from all over the world, and it’s going to be so cool to run the show so many times and see how different audiences respond night after night.
The most challenging thing about performing at the fringe?
I imagine doing the show 27 times in a row will be the most challenging part. My show is very physical, so I’ll have to make sure I’m taking good care of my voice and body.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Credit card, a good show shoe, and another credit card.
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
BE NICE (I think)!
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
Someone who brings me a snack after.
