Hello! Tell us about yourself?

Hi! I’m Avital. I’m a Jewish, depressive, comedian who’s wondering how and why she got herself into the chaos of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the fringe?

Who knows where ideas come from! But my hope is the title does two things.
1) Makes people laugh. I love the idea of “workshopping” a suicide note. And
2) Pulls people in, if dark comedy is their thing, and gives them a little warning, if it isn’t.

Tell us all about your show!

Since my mother took her own life when I was a baby, I’ve felt compelled to shuffle off this mortal coil. But who wants to turn into their Mother? My Fringe debut explores growing up a Hasidic Jew, depression, generational Holocaust trauma, sexual assault, and queerness, while being hilarious. It’s irreverent, subversive, but also filled with meaning.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

Right now I’m mostly excited to see some of my friends’ shows! Lara Ricote’s work in progress, Chloe Radcliffe and Nick Pupo’s shows. Can’t wait to discover loads of UK performers when I’m there. Oh, and Adrian Bliss’s show. No idea what it’ll be, but excited to find out!

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

I haven’t! But I think the best thing for Fringe, and life, honestly, is to do my best to enjoy the process without attaching to results. I know the month will be full of highs and lows, and I’m going to do my best to ride those waves gracefully and joyfully! (Though neither grace nor joy come naturally to me!)

Favourite one liner you have done in a show and why?

Can’t quite pick a favorite as I have a lot. (Humble brag!) But as it pertains to the themes of this show?

“Death is like chicken pox. Better to get it out of the way when you’re young.”

What have been some of the most unique and different comedy shows you have seen this year and why?

I had a really fun time at Britanick’s show last year, and at Emily Wilson’s FIXED.

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

I haven’t been yet, but I assume it’ll be something like: Wake up in my castle, eat haggis for breakfast, change into my kilt, ride the Loch Ness monster to my venue where I perform for Gerard Butler.

What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?

I would say by absorbing as much art as possible. That’s the dream of being at the biggest arts festival in the world. Be a sponge, soak it all in.

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

I’m keen to find out! Honestly, right now I’m just prepared for it to break me, so everything else is a bonus!

The most challenging thing about performing at the fringe?

There’s one night off, but otherwise, it’s 27 straight days of performing for an hour. As someone who loves to stay in, that’ll be a challenge.

What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?

Good coat. Clean undies. Preferred water bottle.

What’s the secret to successful flyering?

Oh boy – I have no idea yet. Eye catching flyer and a warm, engaging personality?

Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?

Anyone who struggles with depression. Anyone with religious trauma or complex family dynamics. Anyone with a morbid sense of humor that needs a good laugh. Or anybody else— please come.

If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?

@avitalash on TikTok & Instagram

And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?

laugh, cry, repeat.
