Hello! Tell us about yourself?
I’m Nathan D’Arcy Roberts a comedian and screenwriter.
How did you come up with the name of your show that your taking to the fringe?
I saw it in a dream. It was on a blue neon sign with a purple outline. In the dream, the sign blew up because the title was so powerful.
Tell us all about your show!
My show covers Toxic Masculinity. The Mixed-Race experience. McDonalds. But mostly it’s about my attempt to escape the shadow of the past and not worry too much about the future. I don’t want to give too much about the show away up front. The joy of seeing shows is going in blind and finding out what it’s about for yourself.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
There are so so many I want to name so I’ll just name the people that I owe money to: Micky Overman. Patrick Spicer. Heidi Regan. Helen Bauer. Crizards. These are the people I owe money. I’m hoping this shout-out lowers the balance. Cos they are not being chill about how long it’s taking me to pay.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
Fringe can be like living in the internet for a month. Get out of the bubble if you can. Go see a movie at The Cameo. Do something unrelated to your show. Give yourself actionable goals. Get a little bit better every day. Remember that this is something you want to do. There’ll be hard days but within a week of going home you’ll wish you were back. Like a Vietnam vet who misses the heat of the jungle.
Favourite one liner you have done in a show and why?
My dad’s like Denzel Washington. But only in so far as he’s black and I’ve never met him.
What have been some of the most unique and different comedy shows you have seen this year and why?
My favourite show of the year so far is John Mulaney’s Baby J.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Wake up. Check IG. Coffee. Check sales. Flyer. Coffee. Perform show. Dopamine crash.
Check IG. Dopamine crash. Listen back to show. Beer. Show. Hang out. Dopamine spike.
Check tomorrow’s sales. Dopamine crash. Bed. [REDACTED]. Sleep. Repeat.
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?
See as many shows as possible. Spend as much time with your friends as possible, take risks on what you see.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
You get to do the thing you love every single day. Every day!
The most challenging thing about performing at the fringe?
You have to do the thing you love every single day. Every. Day.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Portable iPhone charger. A locket with a photo of your girl in it. A bag of sand (when the time comes, you’ll know why).
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
Open with a joke. Then stand on your tip-toes and do not break eye contact to establish dominance. Works every time.
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
Anyone who’s ever wronged me. (I’m assuming in this scenario the show goes well, otherwise that would be a nightmare).
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?

And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
To impress others.
