Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Honey Gentry

Tell us about:

Your latest single you have released:

Under Taurus was inspired by a poem of the same name, by Louise Glück. I first came across the poem about three years ago, and the opening image of looking up at the stars and simply not being able to see what your loved one is pointing out, really stayed with me. So I took the image that the poem had inspired, and crafted the rest of the lyrics around what that meant for me.

Your first single and how you felt when it was released:

The first official Honey Gentry single, Heaven California, was released in April 2018. I’d been sharing demos and covers online for a couple of years, which meant by the time I had an official single to share there was already a little audience of super kind and supportive listeners. They made it a brilliant day.

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

Probably Dreamgirl, or Take Me Somewhere, from my album Dreamgirl. Those tracks took me further in the direction that I wanted to go in as a producer.

Your favourite song to play live:

“Heaven California” – sometimes people sing along!

The song that was the longest to write and why?

Probably actually Under Taurus – I first came across the poem of the same name by Louise Glück in 2020, so the opening image and title was in my mind for at least 2 years before I put my own words to those images and feelings.

Your most emotional track:

Probably Like Neptune, from my debut album HG.

The best lyric you have ever written:

What comes to mind at the moment is “Somewhere in space, there’s a star being born/Nothing but dust and a desire to form” from Nebula. I felt like I was saying so much of what I wanted to communicate, in just those two lines. It’s rare for me to be concise.

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

Terror

The hardest track to play live:

Dreamlover – it had the biggest emotional swell in my tracklist up until that point.

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

I would probably take my Switch!

Describe your fans in three words:

Creative, inquisitive, and sweet!

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

At 17, by Janis Ian. I feel like she so beautifully and perfectly captured what it’s like to be an outsider.

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

This year I’m making my first tentative steps into music for film! So I am hoping to share more of that when the time comes. I’ll also of course be making more music!
