Tell us about:
Your latest single you have released:
Trigger Finger
Your first single and how you felt when it was released:
Drive Too Fast – RELIEVED to have crossed the finish line on finally releasing my first original song published under my own name.
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:
Incremental. The lyrics were a mantra I had going for a while.
Your favourite song to play live:
Trigger Finger – It’s fun to watch other musicians in the audience groove while trying to figure out the time signature in the verse.
The song that was the longest to write and why?
Mourning Coffee because it was the most theatrical and I wanted to make sure it didn’t cross into feeling sappy at all. I largely credit Kaveh Rastegar on upright bass, Kiel Feher on percussion/drums and my wife and creative collaborator
Molly Rogers who arranged and recorded all the strings for helping me cross the finish line with integrity.
Your most emotional track:
Blood Knot. It was a one-take voice memo from when I thought I was in the middle of writing the song on the heels of some troubling family stuff. After listening back I realized there wasn’t any more to the message that needed to be expressed and that I wasn’t going to capture a more honest take.
The best lyric you have ever written:
Hmm… I really like “I want you but you gave into someone else – who sees through your affectionate rage – you have a need to be held without holding be back – to be seen without saving face” – you can hear that in my old band Forebear’s single “Delroy Lindo”
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
Ease and peace like I’m at home.
The hardest track to play live:
Drive Too Fast. I always wanna go full voice during the falsetto sections when singing live like it’s a shouting match. Taming the right dynamic is still a conscious effort.
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
Noise cancelling headphones for planes and bus bunks, slip on sneakers, arcteryx light jacket for all seasons and a phone full of pre downloaded albums, podcasts and audiobooks (currently listening to the Better Angels of Our Nature by Steven Pinker.
Describe your fans in three words:
Friendly, thoughtful, interested
A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:
Madison Cunningham’s “All I’ve Ever Known” off her latest album “Revealer”
What we can look forward to from your band this year:
I’ve got three singles on deck. The first I’m aiming to have released around Valentine’s Day called Laundry List. The second single’s title is still being figured out but it was written the night I heard about my Uncle’s untimely passing. And the third one is this fingerpicking fiasco about the first season of American Horror Story called “Form Into Formless”.
I’ll be heading back out for shows with my dear friend and musical colleague Maddie Poppe. Looks like I’ll be opening for her on a handful of them in addition to accompanying her headline performances. I’m stoked!
