Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Verra Cruz

Tell us about:

Your latest single you have released:

The Word is Crashing in

Your first single and how you felt when it was released:

Our first single was Soul Collides, it was an amazing moment for us to see the vinyl and Cd racked in the Record stores, the single was picked up on U.K. and U.S. radio. Zane low played it as well as K Rock!

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

We have a song called Rise, it was initially on the soul collides EP as a stripped back vocal and guitar track, we later recorded a full band version on our album Emancipation day. It’s a song about beginning again when all seems lost. “I’m down for the count, wanting in but feeling out” It is about following dreams and the cost of that. It’s been a powerful song for us as a band, in the moments when doors have shut and we could have given up or stopped making music this song has pulled us through.

Your favourite song to play live:

The Ballard of Jimmy James. It’s just super fun! It’s a Raging lap steel tribute Hendrix!!!

The song that was the longest to write and why?

The world is Crashing in was probably the longest to write. It was written in a really different way, We were working with German producer Udo Rinklin, he started us off with a chopped up loop of a lap steel riff from another song we were working on. We then build the song up from there, Udo really pushed us with the arrangement, and the lyrics were honed and edited many times. The song was actually started about 11 years before we released it!!

Your most emotional track:

I’m writing a song called Bergamot at the moment. It’s written for my daughter, it’s very emotional for me to sing. I caught her as she was being born, literally caught her LOL! as my wife sat down on the birthing chair I saw her head and reached down and she flopped into my hands. It’s a song about the effect that she’s had on my life, how she’s changed me. You want to shield your kids from this world but also I know I won’t always be around to catch her.

The best lyric you have ever written:

Freedom smells like greed

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

Ha! It’s never the same feeling, it is very dependant on the crowd you are playing for. sometimes you look out and see the faces of friends and family and it lifts you.. often, it’s adrenalin if it’s a big crowd.. these days I try and be very present in the moment, enjoy the sound of guitar, bass and drums! It’s a unique moment in time that will never be re lived so it’s important to drink it in and not miss it!

The hardest track to play live:

Always the “new song” so for us at the moment that is “The World is Crashing in” But also “Like a Lion” is challenging. But, the more you play them, the more they bed in and become part of you..

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

Pants, Bible, Phone, Instruments..

Describe your fans in three words:

Kind Generous Loyal

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

All along the watch tower Bob Dylan. The Hendrix version is so mystical and the guitar playing is amazing, You don’t really know what it’s about but it moves you!

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

We are hungry to get in front of people and rock our guts out! We are also looking to release a batch of new songs and Videos. Hopefully we can head back out into Europe and play some festivals.
