Playing The Favourite – INTERVIEW – The Simple Radicals

Welcome to the feature where we talk to musicians about some of their favourite things about the industry. Today we speak to the band The Simple Radicals – who have recently released the track Let’s See What You Got. Let’s see what is their favourite things!

What is your Favourite:

Song you have written:

“Learn”. It’s a very personal song on what our kids need to know and understand to essentially survive in our complex and challenging world.

Lyric:

From the song “Learn”-  LIFE IS FILLED WITH UNKNOWN THINGS

YOU WILL SEARCH FOR DIRECTION, TO FIND OUT WHAT IT MEANS

AND YOU MUST CHOOSE WHICH PATH TO TAKE

ACCEPT WHAT IT OFFERS OR WHETHER TO CREATE

Musician:

Eddie Vedder is my musical hero. I’m mesmerized with his writing and try to capture the messaging, passion, and energy that he does in his songs. If I can even come within a million miles of that I’d consider it a success.

Film or television show:

“Succession”. Logan Roy kicks ass!

Venue to perform at:

The Cutting Room in New York City.

Item to take with you on tour:

My sanity. Without it I’m crazy.

Instrument:

My Stratocaster. Without it I’m naked and afraid.

Song to play live:

Our new song “Let’s See What You Got”. It’s a true rocker.

Album by another musician:

“Light’s Out” by UFO.

Memory of tour:

Fans singing our lyrics along with us. What an amazing feeling.

Era for music:

‘90’s grunge. Poetry in motion.

Part of making a record:

Writing. I see a lot of images and moods when I write. Certain chord progressions, finger pickings and riffs often direct me on how the song is constructed and then the lyrics start to flow. It’s a bizarre process but it works for me. I write a lot of my songs on an acoustic guitar. I feel that if it sounds good on an acoustic then it’s going to sound even better when plugged in.

Thing about performing at festivals:

Seeing a host of old and new fans. Plus, there is nothing better than playing outside.

Quote:

“The difference between those who do and those who don’t is the ones that do…do.” Basically, don’t sit on your ass. Get out and make things happen. Be a doer.

Thing about the music industry at the moment:

The music industry today has incredible opportunities but also huge challenges. You’re on your own to develop your sound, talent, and audience and then you can try and make it. Tough times no doubt and it’s only for the diligent and resilient bands that want to really invest in their music and build an audience. You constantly must think and rethink what it takes to break out and get noticed.

Thing about 2022?

We just finished the summer playing some fantastic shows and we’re in the studio recording some new material including a wonderful ballad. We also have a podcast called “Music & A Brew” where we drink beer with rock stars. Guests have included Jose Feliciano, Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp, Paul McCartney, John Fogerty), Todd Sucherman (Styx). We just released a new show with Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad and have another show coming out soon with a great up and coming band called Similar Kind.
