Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Michael Webster

Tell us about:

Your latest single you have released:

My latest single came out earlier last year in May, it’s a double single – the a-side being a song about climate change, a pretty angry tune; and the latter side being a romantic ballad I wrote after the lockdown, haha.

Your first single and how you felt when it was released:

My first single was another double single (there’s a trend here!), two songs I actually wrote on Christmas day 2015 whilst celebrating on my own in my flat whilst at university. These two songs came out almost instantaneously, and I knew that they’d be a perfect pair. It was real nice to finally get something properly released!

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

I think I’d have to say “oceania rendevous” – it’s a soft, slow love song that I wrote an age ago and when I was recording it all the pieces just fit together super well, and I’m proper proud of the guitar solo in it as well!

Your favourite song to play live:

One of my newer ones, a song called “waterlines” – it’s fast, shouty and aggressive. Always enjoy performing it!

Your most emotional track:

There’s quite a few! I’d probably say “ibis hotel”, I wrote it in memory of a friend and it holds a lot of meaning.

The best lyric you have ever written:

Back in 2015 I’d have said “give a man a mask, and he’ll show you his true face” – i was real proud of this only to be told by a friend that it’s a quote from Oscar Wilde ahhahah. I do really like the bridge to “firewall” though. “and it’s almost dawn and I carry on,

with anything contemporary that might be postponed, well i’ve seen it all a hundred times before, they said change was on it’s way but it just got ignored”

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

I love it – being able to play your tunes to people and get a positive reaction from them is super lovely. I’m trying to book a bunch more shows in at the moment so hopefully this happens more often!

The hardest track to play live:

I’ve got a new track that I’ve been playing a bit, but the vocal flow is completely different to the guitar melody! Hopefully with a bit more practice I’ll get it, but it can be real difficult to get it on point.

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

Guitar, books, notepads, phone. The work never stops!

Describe your fans in three words:

Lovely, supportive and inspiring.

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

Neil Young’s Harvest Moon. Gorgeous song!

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

Hoping to get another release out by the end of the year!
