Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Melissa Bel

Tell Us about:

Your latest single you have released:

Daydream was inspired by the beautiful English countryside I was fortunate to be locked down in during 2020. It’s about realising that there’s a lot outside of our control, but finding peace in the circumstances we’re in anyway.

Your first single and how you felt when it was released:

My first single must’ve been a song called Distance which came out in 2011 I think…and I was very naive at the time so assumed it could only be a big success! To be fair, it ended up being No. 1 on Montreal radio and sold a decent amount of copies, which gave me a false sense of security that it would continue to be that easy.

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

In the Light (from my 2016 EP In the Light)

Your favourite song to play live:

Better In the Morning. It translates really well to the acoustic guitar and people always seem to respond well to it.

The song that was the longest to write and why?

Something Gained because we kept tweaking the lyrics right up until the very end to make sure the idea was as fully formed as possible.

Your most emotional track:

People That I Love. It was written during lockdown when I hadn’t seen my family in Canada for over a year and it was feeling pretty rough. Most of the vocal on the track was from the writing demo because it had so much raw emotion in it.

The best lyric you have ever written:

“Hearts will break and bridges burn, they’re not mistakes they’re lessons learned” from Something Gained.

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

It feels pretty natural, I really like it up there. It’s a buzz, but also a sense of calm. There are usually a few nerves that dissipate by the time I’ve played the first song.

The hardest track to play live:

People That I Love – I still haven’t tried it live yet.

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

Oil of oregano, workout clothes/trainers, good pair of headphones.

Describe your fans in three words:

Discerning, kind, supportive

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

Dancing With Your Ghost by Sasha Sloan…Gravity by John Mayer…I Forgot That You Existed by Taylor Swift….so many.

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

Well the biggest thing for me this year was releasing the new EP, Alone Time, but I have a couple cool shows coming up to round out the year so stay tuned for announcements on those coming soon!
