Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Drew Thomas

Tell Us about:

Your latest single you have released:

All My Friends is my latest single and was written about watching all my mates settle down and start to have kids, get married and buy houses but feeling like my life was on a totally different path. It is the ultimate party rock tune to slam on at parties so I hope listeners love it!

Your first single and how you felt when it was released:

I’ve released music for years in various projects but my first official single as a solo artist was a song called Soho – a song about moving to London and starting a new relationship. I was terrified of releasing it to start with but the response for a first release was amazing!

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

I have a song called Mayflies which is definitely my favourite non-single track. Mayflies only live for a day and it felt like the perfect metaphor for broken promises and life having a way of changing so much in 24 hours. I’ve even got a mayfly tattooed on my arm because I loved it so much!

Your favourite song to play live:

This is a tough one but probably a song called Smoke. It’s a balls-to-the-wall rock song which was written with live shows in mind and the adrenaline rush after I’ve played it is always GREAT.

The song that was the longest to write and why?

I tend to try and avoid spending too long on songs if the magic isn’t coming. Most of my best songs are written in the space of ten minutes so anything that is taking weeks or months to sort, I generally try to put to the side for a bit. Out of my released songs though, it took me a while to be completely happy with the lyrics to a song from my first EP – Lying on the Concrete.

Your most emotional track:

There’s a song called Somebody You Needed which was released during the first Covid lockdown. It was originally about a break up but found a new meaning during that time during its release when people felt trapped and lonely. I still listen back to it and get emotional thinking about that time.

The best lyric you have ever written:

“It’s a burden of duty to be who I am. With your cards on my table, I’ll play out the hand.”

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

It’s always a mix of nerves and excitement; I definitely think if I ever play a show and I’m not nervous then something is wrong. The whole experience just feels right though. I love entertaining people and sharing my art with the world.

The hardest track to play live:

I have a song called San Francisco which is SO hard to sing. It’s a live favourite so I have to play it but trust me, those notes are HIGH!

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

Honey, lemon for my throat and a phone charger. Phones die so much quicker on tour and I swear no venues in the UK ever have a spare phone charger to lend!

Describe your fans in three words:

Supportive, fun and random. They’re wicked and I never know what to expect from them at gigs!

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

The Fray – Over My Head (Cable Car). I’m pretty sure I wrote this song in a parallel universe. It has Drew Thomas written all over it!

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

I’m planning on taking the band out to do a bunch of shows across the country which will be really fun. I’m planning the release of my next EP as well so stay tuned – it’s gonna be a big one!
