Welcome to the feature where we talk to musicians and artists to find out in depth information about their brand new singles and music. Today we speak to London based artist Lisabel about the brand new single Flor de Louis.
Hello Lisabel tell us three unknown facts about yourself?
Hii! Three unknown facts.. As well as being a musician I am a candle maker and I own a small candle business called The Masked Garden. I am also a stand in and double in movies, I work in productions around London and the UK. Last one… a few years ago I took a floristry course because I love flower arranging!
How did you get into music?
I’ve always loved music as a kid, initially I thought I wanted to be a dancer but when I took my first singing lesson I knew immediately I wanted to be a musician. I never stopped making music ever since.
Where do you find your inspirations?
I get inspired by everything that touches my soul, it could be a view, a conversation, a person, a movie, nature.. anything!
Tell us all about your latest single Flor De Lois?
Flor de Louis is a modern soul/pop/disco track I wrote about my relationship with my brother. We’re very close and I wanted to dedicate a song to him as a tribute to our bond.
How long did it take to write the song?
Flor de Louis specifically went through many phases, when I first started writing it I had in mind a soul/latin arrangement but as we started meeting up with the band it organically became a more modern and groovy track, very produced and less ‘live’.
What is the most exciting thing about producing a record?
One of the things I love the most about making music is the writing process, when the idea hits me and I grab it and develop it. I love that feeling.
How do you warm up for a show?
I don’t have a particular pre show warm up, i just go through the songs either alone or with the band and get ready to channel my vulnerability and love for the music.
Also let’s talk tour – will there be live shows coming soon?
Yes! I will be playing at Ronnie’s Scott tonight. Very excited about this one.
What is one of your favourite songs to perform live?
I wrote a song called ‘We Are’ which I haven’t released yet but I love performing live! Tonight we will be playing ‘Flor de Louis’ live for the first time so that should be fun!
What is the toughest songs to perform live and why?
Some of the songs that are part of my album ‘A Work of Art’ are challenging to play live because I don’t usually have many backing vocals on stage with me which carry the track a lot in the studio version. I also have a song called ‘For Your Love I Cry’ that is vocally challenging but I adore performing it!
Our site also is about improv – in a music sense, what have been some of your favorite improvised melodies that you have created and been able to use in songs and why?
I love improvisation, I studied jazz so I am all about taking a moment in each song to let go and free my musical imagination. Some of those lines I guess end up in some of my compositions!
What are your plans for the rest of the year?
My plan for the rest of the year is to finish a few songs I am currently working on, one of which has a video attached to it as well. I am beyond excited about that!
And finally why should people check out your music?
Hopefully my music has a fresh take on either instrumentation, arrangement or something as simple as a lyric that conveys powerful feelings. I am inspired by lots of music and strive to create new stories and new sounds that represent my style!
