The one thing I love about music is that everyone has their own story to tell – the musician, the lyrics, the way the fans decipher them and also the way a song can also create a memory or a meaning to someone. That is what this new article is all about. Each fortnight, we will take a look at a different song and I will take you as a trip down memory lane as to what it means to me. Welcome to Music Memories.
Track: The Sweetest Thing
Original Release Date: 19th October 1998
I find it funny to think about this topic as it has brought back so many memories over the time that I have started writing this article and so many more pop up that I remember I have to talk about them. There are some songs and bands that I am always surprised that there are memories attached to and when I look back they always make me smile. Today we are going to look at a song that I would never ever think would be one that would stick in my memory but it does and let me tell you why.
There was this guy at school, yes all good music stories usually start with a guy and I have a lot of them. In a previous one of these I have discussed this said guy before. When I was at school a lot of music in the early noughties was still transitioning from casette to CD and sometimes songs were hard to get hold of – especially if you only wanted one or two songs by a musician.
I was with this guy in one of my regular lessons and even though I had the biggest crush on him, I was also good friends with him and we got on very well. One of the things that we had in common was our music tastes. He offered one day to make me a mixed CD of songs that I must listen to. I was so excited – a mixed tape for me!
The day came when he gave it to me, it had his hand writing over it and I am sure it had a few doodles on the inlay as well. I listened to it on the way home and took every song seriously as to what music he felt was good for me and what I should be listening to and songs he thought I would like. A lot of the tracks were rock music and bands that I knew that we both liked but the one that surprised me the most was one of the last ones. He had put U2 The Sweetest Thing on there, it was so left field and completely different to any other song on there. Also, this was like 2004 and this track was from 1998 so it felt very old to be added to it. I totally read way too much into it and what this song be added to it.. I was so excited that there was a song like that on there and felt it meant something… it more then likely did not but it only made me like him more.
I am not sure if I have the CD anymore, I do not think I do but whenever I rarely hear that track, it reminds me of him.
