Forgotten Pop

Forgotten Pop! – This Week – Standing In The Way Of Control

There are so many songs that are out there everywhere then all of a sudden they disappear and you only hear from them very rarely that they can create a sense of nostalgic for you, the listener. So roll up and welcome to Forgotten Songs where we celebrate these forgotten wonders.

Standing In The Way Of Control – Gossip

Today we are going to look at a track that you may recognise as it was the song that was used as the unofficial theme song to a television show on E4 in the late noughties.

Standing In The Way Of Control was a single by the American Indie group the Gossip that was released in 2006. It was written by Hannah Blilie, Nathan Howdeshell and Mary Beth Patterson and released under the record labels of Back Yard Recordings and Kill Rock Stars. The single was off of the album with the same name.

The track was written as a response to the Federal Marriage Amendment which would have constitutionally outlaws same-sex marriage in the USA. The track was also used a lot in the advertising campaigns for the E4 television show Skins that it became a sort of unofficial anthem for it.

Standing In The Way of Control did really well in the UK charts and went into the top 40 at number 7. It was one of those tracks that had a heavy drum beat and this really catchy electronic sound to it that it was really hard not to like it.
