Hello! Tell us about yourself?

Hello! I was born and raised in Singapore, I moved to the UK at 18 to pursue comedy and in the summer of 2018 joined the London scene. Over the next two years I developed my own webseries and comedy night (UBGEComedy: a car crash interview series followed by a live gig in a London living room), made it to the finals of the Laughing Horse New Act of the Year and 2NorthDown New Act of the Year competitions, as well as winning Cherry Comedy Break out Act of the Year 2020. Hit by the pandemic only a few days after bringing home my trophy, I then moved to Manchester where, despite a pause in live comedy, came second in the Funny Women Stage Awards 2020.

Described as “fast moving…and absurd” (Diva Magazine) and “an engagingly idiosyncratic act” (Chortle), my stand up is made up of word play, short jokes, odd observations and surreal storytelling set to a charmingly uncomfortable rhythm. My unique offbeat style saw me mentioned in a shout out by XS Malarkey on Chortle’s ‘Ones to Watch 2022.’ An alternative comedian who’s “weird but with at least one toe still in observational reality” (Chortle), I’m debuting this year at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with my show ‘Eryn Tett Finds Her Audience’

How did you come up with the name of your show that your taking to the fringe?

As someone who is a bit off beat, I often get the advice ‘find your audience.’ So I was like…I’ll do that then. In the quickets most efficient way possible. Collecting audience data, and their actual faces.

Tell us all about your show!

Known for her unique off-beat comedy, Eryn Tett can be difficult to categorise. Forever unpredictable, Eryn’s incisive joke writing mixes with an expansive sense of absurdism to cause chaos amongst even the savviest rooms. Caught up between belly laughs and lingering giggles, blank faces watch as their friends wipe away tears for reasons that only evade them. Although clearly rooted in the confines of stand up, she’s far west from the mainstream, setting up the future of cult comedy. But with no clear path to follow, she has often wondered what her journey through the comedy world would entail. She always gets the same advice: ‘find your audience.’ So now she will. In the most efficient way possible.

With a style that toes the line between straight standup and absurdism, classic misfit and newly proactive Eryn Tett (Funny Women Stage Award Runner up 2021 / Cherry Comedy Breakout Act of the Year Winner 2020) is collecting important data in search of ‘her audience.’ Holding a series of ‘focus groups’ across the country, armed with a wall of mug shots, notes and very scientific detailed analysis, Eryn will be performing her show while gathering valuable feedback; learning everything she needs to know to truly define and ultimately find her audience. From calculating the statistics of where ‘her audience’ likes to sit to extracting their deepest passions, every bit of information contributes to Eryn honing into her exact target demographic, with the hopes of creating a flawless Eryn-Tett’s- audience-attracting ad campaign.

From misunderstanding moody candles, redefining ‘baby on board’ badges to unpacking her recent encounter with therapy and new diagnosis, ‘Eryn Tett Finds Her Audience’ is a bizarre exploration of her unique perspective. Expect word play, odd observations and surreal storytelling set to a charmingly uncomfortable rhythm, as Eryn takes an entirely literal approach to the sage advice: ‘find your audience.’

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

I did a split show for two weeks a while ago! I think some good advice is: it’s always worth doing a show even if there’s only a few people in. I think this goes beyond the festivals!

The advice I’m taking on this time is… ‘pace yourself.’ Two weeks was tough, so I’m really going to need to power through a whole month!

Favourite one liner you have done in a show and why?

I think it’s important to talk about the birds and the bees, cos they should not be fucking. It’s just a nice little quick one

What three items are essential for a successful Fringe?

For me it’s my laptop, my flip chart and a pen. Don’t think this translates well onto other acts, but I can’t do my show without them!

What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?

By getting enough sleep I reckon!

The best thing about performing at the fringe?

I’m excited to bring a show to the fringe! I get to put together all of my favourite jokes and watch the show progress for a month. I think the best part will be being around so many arts and comedy lovers.

The most challenging thing about performing at the fringe?

I’m not so great with crowds! But think I’m going to have to deal with it!

What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?

Eye blinds, ear plugs, notebook- gotta get your sleep and your ideas down

Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?

Funnily enough, I’ve put together all the data and photographs to figure this out! Come to my show and see

If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?

I’m @eryntettcomedy across most platforms! Instagram, FB and Twitter

And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
