Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are) – Pras feat Ol’ Dirty Bastard & Mya
Today we look at a single that I forgot existed until I saw it on Top of The Pops 2 the other day, it is one of those tracks that when you hear it you sing along to the chorus as you remember it really clearly.
Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are) was a single by American rapper Pras which featured R&B singer Mya and another rapper called Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The track was released on the 6th June 1998, it was produced by Wyclef Jean and Che Pope and was released under the record label of Interscope. The song samples the track Islands In The Stream by the BeeGees. On their Greatest Hits album that they released in 2001 they even did a new version of their well known track where they added the chorus from Ghetto Superstar.
Apparently the track was originally meant to be a duet between Pras and Mya but Ol’ Dirty Bastard was recording Sunz of Man in the same location and accidentally burst into the recording studio whilst they were setting up to record, he heard the song and wanted to participate.
The track did really well in the charts and went to number one in a number of countries including Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand and Norway. In the United Kingdom the song had a lot of success, it went to number 1 in both the R&B and Dance chart and just missed the top spot in the official charts.
