Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Juls

Tell Us about:

Your first single and how you felt when it was released:

From a very young age, I had a deep passion for singing and listening to music. However, when I turned fourteen, I began song writing and this pastime quickly transformed into a lifeline of sorts. Throughout high school, I wrote hundreds of songs, discovering my voice as a writer and artist; my sound can best be described as a mix between Taylor Swift and Lana del Rey. At college, I started learning about recording processes and taking actionable steps to turn the music inside of my head into something more tangible. Since then, I have grown tremendously as a singer, songwriter, and musician, and last semester, I had the unique opportunity to record my first EP with producer Alex Fumo.

Summer Thing is my first release in about a year and half, a choice that was both intentional and necessary; I wanted to make sure we were doing the songs justice and really set my sights on finding a producer who shared my vision. I believe that these songs are incredibly special, and thus, timing was not a concern as much as creating them in the right way and with the right people. The stars aligned the day that I met Alex and I do feel like we are a yin and yang of sorts in the studio – our strengths suit each other, and we share the exact same vision. I feel so blessed to have created music that feels so true to me as an artist, and I absolutely can’t wait to share what we have created with the world ! Releasing this single was easily one of the most exciting days of my life.

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

Ughh but these songs feel like my babies !! I love em all haha but if you’re asking with a gun to my head my favourite might be a song called “Britney”

Your favourite song to play live:

I love performing a song called heartbreaker live because it’s a little creepy & crawly

Your most emotional track

Britney

The best lyric you have ever written:

Ever ?! Way too hard hunny. But recently I’ve really been liking the lyrics: “and our song plays in my head I hear all the strings, so I guess no strings attached ain’t working” from Summer Thing.

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

Honestly? I feel nervous and not always in a fun way. I just try to take deep breaths and remind myself that everyone in the crowd is there for a good time & looking for reasons to enjoy your performance! The nerves usually dissipate once I’m on stage though and that’s when the real fun begins.

The hardest track to play live:

The hardest song for me to play live is probably summer thing just because I just sing this song to the track and I’m really used to performing with my acoustic. Also, there’s a high note towards the end of the bridge that always pushes me a bit out of my comfort zone.

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

I have never been on tour, but I would say when I do start touring, I will absolutely need to have my guitar, lil bb, with me. No other guitar really feels the same.

Describe your fans in three words:

Supportive. Smart. And so damn AMAZING.

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

Young and Beautiful by Lana del Rey. Really anything by Lana del Rey. Lana is entirely the reason I do what I do so I’m definitely her biggest fan.

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

This year, I have two more singles lined up and my first ever EP !! I could not be prouder of what we have created; I write all of my songs, and thus, I have always had a very distinct vision of how I want the music to sound. However, these songs have truly surpassed even my wildest hopes and dreams. I simply feel like the luckiest girl on the planet to be able to share this music with the world, and I hope you guys can hear the heart we have poured into each track. If even one person truly resonates with my music, that would be enough to fill me up for this lifetime (though I’m hoping my music resonates with a few more haha).
