Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Staytus

Tell us about:

Your latest single you have released:

The latest single I have released is: “Part Of Me.” It is off my upcoming album, Disease Of The Mind. I originally recorded, wrote, and sung it in a burst of creativity and emotion, while I was daydreaming in my bedroom. The song is about a parasocial relationship of a fan. The fan longs to be adored by their love interest, even if they have no idea who they are or if they even feel the same about them.

Your first single and how you felt when it was released:

My first single was: “Dreams From Hell.” I had a lot of fun recording the production elements of this song. I used a lot of vintage Mac 9 audio technology for the effects. The written parts and instrumentation were thrown into the likes of Digidesign TurboSynth, Arboretum HyperPrism Plug-in Pack, ReBirth RB-338, Native Instruments Reaktor, and MetaSynth.

Your favorite song that you have created that is an album track:

I’d have to say “Really Gone” or “Nevermore” because I had a lot of fun recording the vocals for them. I just sang what was on my mind at the time. Plus, they’re both incredibly catchy. I built the instrumentation in Avid Pro Tools using randomly found samples and basically just time-stretched and overloaded each audio track with effects.

Your favourite song to play live:

I like “An Echo In Space” because it’s a really intimate song about breaking up in a relationship. In a way, I based it off of my own experiences. And I think it’s pretty cool that my fans can also relate to it.

Your most emotional track:

I think my song “Hourglass” fits that description pretty well. I was singing my heart out about the anxieties I had about my fears of aging and dying. I understand that death is a natural process and we all go through it, but it gives me anxiety to think about when it will happen.

The best lyric you have ever written:

“into the forest

behind the trees

i’ve given my life

bent on both knees

lurking around

circling my path

succumb to my

beautiful aftermath”

This is a lyric passage from: “None Of It.” I just think it’s edgy and beautiful at the same time.

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

I’ve felt less worried or anxious about the thought of an upcoming tour. Maybe I’m even excited or hyped. I really do think I can see an upcoming “Staytus” tour.

The hardest track to play live:

I’d say “Arrhythmia” solely because it challenges my singing skills. It’s a very difficult song to play live. However, it also was one of my first songs I ever wrote and recorded. I started singing lessons three years ago. I feel that I’ve improved a lot since then.

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

I haven’t really toured yet. But I guess I’d always take a spare change of my gothic clothing that I always wear, even on stage and out in public.

Describe your fans in three words:

I guess the fan bases of Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, and Black Dresses combined. I absolutely love my fans and try to respond to everyone. Their comments truly brighten my day, even the random, nice ones that say “Awesome music!”

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

Nine Inch Nails – “The Fragile.” I love this song, and the entire album that comes with it. Trent Reznor’s raw emotion is just truly breath-taking, both in the instrumentation and the singing.

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

I’ll be premiering music videos to my single tracks, “Dreams From Hell,” “Hourglass,” and “Part of Me.” In addition, look for the entire album, Disease Of The Mind, to be released in 2022!
