Behind The New Music – INTERVIEW – Test Dummy, Kami Kehoe

Welcome to the feature where we talk to musicians and artists to find out in depth information about their brand new singles and music. Today we speak to Las Vegas based musician Kami Kehoe about the passionate and emotional new track Test Dummy.

Hello! Tell us about your brand new single Test Dummy?

Test Dummy is definitely one of my more vulnerable tracks. I used a lot of emotion when it came to the writing and recording process. This song was inspired by a folk, rock, and ballad genres and I was able to incorporate all those into one.

How did the song come about?

I wrote this song about 6 months ago after a relationship I had been in. The song flowed really well I feel each lyric truly explained how I was feeling.

How long did it take to write?

When I wrote Test Dummy it probably took me an hour or 2 to really put the song together. But the concept and the melodies came almost immediately.

What is the main theme of the song?

The theme of the song is about feeling used in a relationship. Being someone’s “test dummy”.

What about the production process, what was the most tricky thing about recording the track?

The production started off with a guitar loop and then I mumbled some melodies, then added some drums using my midi keyboard. I wanted the overall production to sound folky with a little rock inspiration but still being able to keep that emotional ballad vibe

How do you approach a new song in the studio?

I make music all day so I’m always writing or coming up with new material. So it just comes super natural. It’s become apart of my routine.

How do you feel on the release day of a new song?

I’m always super excited to release a new song. Especially with test dummy because that showed a different style that I could do. Especially vocally.

How do you think your fans are going to react to the new track?

I think Test Dummy is more on the slower pace some people may or may not vibe with it. But my main goal is to have my fans connect with the message of the song. And to be able to relate to how I was feeling at the time. The best messages I’ve gotten were from the people who genuinely connected to the lyrics and I love that.

Tell us about the music video? What was the inspiration?

There was no music vid. But my inspiration for the cover art and Spotify canvas was using caution tape as a way to protect myself. Caution tape being a metaphor to protect my heart and my mind from going through that situation I talk about in the song.

Was it fun to film?

I had a blast shooting the cover art and teasers. My photographer/videographer the Milla (@themilla on ig) was super inspired by the track so he really enjoyed shooting my vision.

What is your favourite lyric in the track?

My favorite lyric in the song is actually the first few lines in the beginning “I saw a penny and I threw it the well, I wished for memories, to isolate themselves, so you never met me. So I could save myself” I love this part because It painted a visual in my head and it came so easy when it came to writing. The words just fell into place.
