Behind The New Music – INTERVIEW – After Hours, BINNY

Welcome to the feature where we talk to musicians and artists to find out in depth information about their brand new singles and music.

Today we speak to BINNY, who has just released the brand new single After Hours. The track is inspired by challenges faced when trying to find the balance between work and relationships.

Hello! Tell us about your brand new single After Hours

“After Hours” was inspired by the balance of work and relationships. It’s about making time for the person you care about.

How did the song come about?

I actually sat on the concept and title for the song for years. I created the instrumental for it but didn’t know exactly what lyrics I wanted to write over it. So I went through my notes on my phone and revisited this idea of “After Hours” and started writing.

How long did it take to write?

It took me about two hours to write the entire song. This was definitely one of the faster songs for me to write.

What is the main theme of the song?

The main theme of the song is to find time through busy work schedules to be with someone you care about. Life can get crazy with work and other factors but it’s special to be around someone where it’s easy and you can decompress with.

What about the production process, what was the most tricky thing about recording the track?

I actually recorded this song in my own home-studio, which there are pros and cons to. I feel the most comfortable recording music in my home. I think the trickiest thing was finding a place to record my vocals without allowing much echo. In order to achieve that, I recorded it in a closet.

How do you approach a new song in the studio?

I really try to listen to the instrumental of a song first and identify what emotion it evokes in me. For “After Hours”, it made me feel dreamy and romantic so I wanted to tap into that lyrically. I’ll start humming and creating melodies that go with the track and then eventually, writing lyrics for it.

How do you feel on the release day of a new song?

I get nervous because my music is such an intimate part of who I am that I’m sharing with the world. I am a more reserved person that does not express my feelings easily so releasing anything personal can be nerve-wrecking. But it’s also exciting because I hope people can listen and relate to my music. It creates an instant connection that’s rewarding.

How do you think your fans are going to react to the new track?

I hope that they love it! I think it’s one of my best, lyrically and I think that it really shows a softer side of me.

Tell us about the music video? What was the inspiration?

I really wanted to create a visual that would evoke the emotion of falling in love and wanting to be with someone all the time. I stuck with a specific color palette for the entire video that created this dreamy and affectionate atmosphere.

Was it fun to film?

It was fun to film the visual myself but it was also more fun for me to edit everything. I’ve always loved video editing so it was cool I was able to utilize my skills in that for this visual.

What is your favourite lyric in the track?

I was sitting on the lyric “When I’m done with my 9-5, I’ll work your body from 5-9” for a while and it was the catalyst for the rest of the song.

For those who are new to your music, where can they find you on social media?

They find me on all social medias (Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram) at @binnyiscoming

Finally three words why people should listen to your new single?

Dreamy, romantic escape.
