Tell Us about:
Your latest single you have released:
Ben: The Boatman
Your first single and how you felt when it was released:
Simon: Excited to finally have something to show everyone what we’ve been doing for so so long.
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:
Ben: Don’t Spoil My Fun; it’s the most punk track we’ve got, very much my vibe, breakdown ending slaps and I think we handle the subject matter in quite a witty way
Your favourite song to play live:
Alex and Simon: Probably Fresh Blood. It has a lot of bounce to it, so it becomes very difficult not to get carried away on stage, which is exactly what you want when you’re putting on a show.
Ben: Bright Blue Eyes because it’s so raw, and has so much energy.
Phil: Wreckage, one of our as yet unrecorded songs, the chord changes and hugeness of the solo section make it a fun one just to go all out on live and as long as you hit those chordal changes it sounds amazing.
Your most emotional track:
Phil: My Heroine, as it was written about a darker point in my own past. When that song was first coming together with the band, I found it hard not to get emotional. I wrote the bulk of the lyrics with no music to put it to and I can’t sing, so I just put it out there as an idea to the band. Hearing something so personal, turn into a group effort that is so much more than I could achieve on my own was awesome.
The best lyric you have ever written:
Ben: “I can’t sleep, out in the dark they lurk, I am weak, the drugs I take don’t work”
Alex: “Another fake believer! Imposter! Deceiver! Fallen for that mask again, a lie become a second skin.”
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
Phil: Over the top confidence and cockiness followed by embarrassment, as I mess up, my start in the first song.
Ben: Butterflies until the first drum kick, they just joy and adrenaline.
Simon: Excitement; flooded with nerves.
Alex: Strangely, calm.
The hardest track to play live:
Ben: Again, Bright Blue Eyes. Its rawness means that I have a lot of words to sing in a very short period of time.
Alex: Also, Bright Blue Eyes. It’s fast and has a lot of movement, and I think I’ve had a hand cramp after every performance so far.
Phil: Probably the intro to Wreckage, we seem to keep writing songs where the guitar starts with no accompaniment and on that song, in particular, I always wish I had simplified the picking pattern and chord embellishments.
Simon: The Boatman
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
Simon: Sticks and Picks!
Phil: And jumpers, I’m always cold.
Describe your fans in three words:
Simon: Supportive loyal bandicoots.
A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:
Ben: Talking Myself In Circles by Four Year Strong.
Phil: Reach Out, I’ll Be There by Four Tops
What we can look forward to from your band this year:
Ben: Gigs, hopefully some festival slots, and an album, maybe sooner than you think.
