Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Sabbatical Bob

Tell us about:

Your latest single you have released:

Our latest single is called “Drive”. In many ways its a love song, or better yet a pre-love song, about the thoughts and feelings before love comes to fruition. We have definitely drawn on D’Angelo as an influence here with Ben laying down down the juicy harmonies the really turn this song into a soulful love ballad, with a backbeat of course. Drive is about Love, Life, and the great journey we are all on in this strange and unknown world.

Your first single and how you felt when it was released:

Our first single wasn’t so much a single as it was our first record which we released three years ago. When we released “Sabbatical Bob: Live and in Person” I knew that we were starting on a fantastic musical journey together based upon love, friendship, and funk. In our first record we were trying to showcase the Sabbatical Bob Live Experience to the best of our abilities, making an attempt at transporting our audience to one of our live shows from the comfort of their home. With our new record, we strive to showcase SB in all of it glory, both compositionally and sonically.

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

That’s definitely a tough one but I’d have to say Paradise. This is our “Magnum Opus” if you will, putting the sonic and technical mastery of the band on full display. In between Paradise Parts I and II we take our audience on a sonic journey with various “Interludes” that further showcase the band members and quite a few of our influences on a more individual level. Smack in the middle of these interludes is our “Ignorant take” of “Shake That Vibe”, a Funk Rock charge to the people to worry less and have more fun. All of this taken into account, “Paradise” is quite the musical journey that we know our audience will enjoy!

Your favourite song to play live:

Electrolyte Solution/Broken Thumb- This is such a high energy track with so many twists and turns. With a drastic dynamic change around every corner, this song always keeps the audience, and the band, on their toes.

Your most emotional track:

I think drive takes the medal on this one. its our first attempt at a love ballad and it really is from the heart.

The best lyric you have ever written:

“I think I wanna go for a drive with you baby. Lemme get to know you, reap and sowe with you, i want to look inside your mind”

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

Electric! We know that we are about to get down with our audience and most importantly make everybody feel good! That feeling isn’t really possible any other time except during a show!

The hardest track to play live:

Electrolyte Solution/Broken Thumb- As mentioned earlier this one is always a challenge. We wrote this song in such a way that everyone in the band has to stay on their toes and really listen to each other. On top of the dynamics this song is also very technical, not to mention very fast!

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

Water, Bev, and Herb, in addition to all of our Gear and Merch!

Describe your fans in three words:

Funky, Electrified, Animated

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

777-9311 By Prince or Getaway by Earth Wind and Fire

What we can look forward to from your band in 2022:

A Tour, cross country covid willing, as well as the beginnings of our next record which will be a study in classic funk, soul, and R&B.
