Welcome to a feature that will be published every other week. I go to a lot of gigs and there are always little stories that come out of them that I always want to tell someone so what better place to do it!
The Air Traffic Concert
There was a time, which I think was 2007, where I took a lot of time getting to know the bands that were part of the BBC Introducing or NMEs bands to keep an eye on in the new year. One of the groups that I discovered through one of these articles was Air Traffic. At college my friend and I spent ages listening to their music and really enjoying it. When I got to university I got a chance to see them live which I was really excited about.
A few years had passed since 2007 and it was now 2009 and it was announced that Air Traffic were going to be doing a gig in a local church that had recently been changed into a night club. The night club was weird, I went there on opening night and they gave everyone a chilli shot at the entrance that was in a glass container and loads of people threw their glasses on the floor that the dancing area was covered in broken glass. The toilets were bizarre as well, it took me ages to work out how to get water from the sink and it was the first time I had ever come across a push button on the floor. The sink looked like something from Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets.
Going there as a gig venue was a whole different experience, the room transformed and when the band started to play it was evident that it was perfect for that sort of experience as the acoustics were perfect. We were on the balcony so we had a really great view of the band and it also means that we have a great spot for the sound.
It was a great gig, the band were really entertaining even though that they had only had one album there was still a lot to love. They climbed on the speakers and sang some acoustic songs from there as well. It was a fun gig and I wish I had seen them more before they broke up but that gig I will always remember.
