Magic Of The Music Video – The Missed Tapes – By Now, Marianas Trench

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are doing something a bit different – since I started this article I have had to choose four or five music videos for each month for the selected band or artist I decide to discuss. However, there are some videos that I love that just miss out on entering the top of my favourites so I thought it would be fin this month to do something called The Missed Tapes and have a look at music videos by bands we have previously covered but did not get a chance to shine in the sun.

Marianas Trench – By Now

Why did you choose this particular video?

This is a really interesting video and it really ties up the story theme from the music videos depicting the Ever After album. This video clears up a lot of questions that may of been lingering about the other videos and brings them into reality. It is a very clever video and there are so many fun eight techniques to tie up the surreal and the reality.

So, what is the narrative?

A Video that sums up the past few and explains what was happening in reality for these unusual music videos to take place. Drugs, violence and fights all happen and shows how Josh betrayed bandmates for love.

Favourite parts of the video?

There are lots of short quick shots of different parts of the video tied together to tease what is coming and sort of act like fragments of memories. The Music hasn’t started and instead is a narrative set up by Josh Ramsay which sort of creates this sense of finale to this section of music by Marianas Trench, this is a really clever technique and acts sort of like a film.

There are these shots of drug taking throughout the are pretty important to the narrative. I really like the use of colour lighting effects to highlight and really connote the danger with drugs in this music video. I like the way it plays around with lights and blurs. All these effects really highlight the disturbance the drugs have had with Joshs memories and the blurring connotes the creating of a different reality.

Another thing I love about this video is the use of colour grades in the shots. I find it really interesting that in the edit there are lots of shadows and use of colours of yellow, blue and orange used to create emotions.

Throughout the video there are these little objects that connect the past videos to this one. It portrays how certain things have created a big part in Joshs mind when he has tried to blank out the bad parts of his relationship. They are added so subtly that it really is very effective.
