This month I got the opportunity to catch up with the people behind the improvisational podcast IMDp – The Improvised Movie Director Podcast. The podcast is an improvised comedy interview where each episode the regular host Martina Minnow interviews a guest about a movie they’ve made. The movie is made up of the titles of two already popular films and the guest has to improvise what the film is about. In our final section of you interview, Sabrina answers our fun quick fire questions.
Who are your top 5 favourite improvisers and why?
In no particular order;
Maria Peters
Lauren Shearing
Susan Harrison
Pippa Evans
Monica Gaga
They all have a joyful and fearless approach to improv, that makes them so compelling to watch and inspiring to learn from.
What is your favourite warm up game?
Mind meld – it happens all the time
Favourite short form game?
Pan left
What are the three top tips anyone has ever taught you in improv?
- Make your scene partner look good and the rest will fall into place
- Pull from your own life to make your characters more realistic
- Have fun – the audience don’t know what your format is meant to look like, but they will know if you are or aren’t having fun.
In no more than 5 words, what advice would you give them?
Be brave; you are enough
What are some of your favourite new acts you have come across this year and why?
I always really enjoy seeing Track 96 because they have a lot of energy and fun together on stage
How would you describe your personal sort of improv?
Naturalistic – I love playing characters you feel you’ve met before somewhere
Describe each member of the podcast team in one word
- Steve Tanner (producer): genius
- Marty Sears (artist): imaginative
- Rory Vieyra (resident improviser): fearless
- Vicky Hawley (resident improviser): erudite
- Ryan Murphy (resident improviser): quick
If you could be any animal what would it be and why?
Meerkat – they have a strong team spirit and always have each other’s back.
Who is your favorite super hero and why?
Not quite a super hero, but I really liked Penny Crayon as a kid. I think it would be really handy to be able to draw something and it then appear – and it would make for a great improv show. Drawprov? Penprov? I reckon I’m on to something here.
If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?
I’d like it to be a cartoon, and think I’d be a cross between Dora the Explorer and Spinelli from Recess.
If you could go any where in the world where would you go and why?
Japan! I’ve wanted to go for a long time and I think it would be unlike anywhere I’ve ever been before.
What would you do with your “15 minutes” of fame?
I’d give my 15 mins of fame to someone else who would make better use of them. I’d profile someone like Marcus Rashford who is using his fame to make sure children and vulnerable families have enough to eat. There’s someone using their fame to make an amazing difference.
What is one item you could NEVER live without?
My diary
Last time you laughed very hard out loud?
This morning’s IMDp recording, watching Vicky play Gremlinspector Gadget.
What is your favorite movie quote?
‘We accept the love we think we deserve’ – The Perks of Being a Wallflower
