I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are looking at the band that I think was the first emo band I listened to when the genre and style came about in the mid noughties. I wasn’t sure of My Chemical Romance at first but when I heard Helena I absolutely loved them. Their videos are dark but they are very beautifully edited and put together to create this world and I think that is why there is so much love for this band. As they have grown older the creativity in their videos have developed and become amazing, I mean look at the way they announce their return to the world below and you will see why I wanted to include them in this feature.
My Chemical Romance – Na Na Na
Why did you choose this particular video?
After the success of The Black Parade, it was always going to be a challenge to follow up the album with a catchy track and My Chemical Romance succeeded with this single and there is so much to like yet again. Whilst the colours are bold, the same themes are still slightly prominent and the editing is a lot of fun.
So, what is the narrative?
The video features a strangely garbed outlaw gang called the Killjoys who are being pursued in the badlands around Battery City by the sinister executive Korse.
Favourite parts of the video?
Opening is very much edited like the opening to a film and a sort of trailer. There are a lot of shots to tease the audience in whilst also setting up the narrative to the music video. It has a very different look to the Black Parade Movement but the colours red, black and white are still incredibly prominent. The way that you are introduced to this music video is like you are dropped right into the middle of an ongoing narrative and it is very clever.
The thing that I like about this music video is that it feels like you have stepped into the world of a comic book as there are a lot of fun edits that sort of creates this fantasy world. You have these really fun split screens throughout and a lot of lens flares which again bring a sense of drama and this film like world to the screen. There is a lot of short snappy shots full of a lot of narrative points which really work incredibly well with these clever editing styles and techniques.
The final things I really like about this music video is the colour grade as it is really bold throughout and adapted to what is happening in the scene which creates this really striking effect. I really like the way that the band sort of take a bit of a back seat compared to their other videos. whilst they are the main characters throughout the narrative it is a about this bigger world and a lot of the time they have masks on or very short shots on them to really highlight the action.
