Don’t Mess Improv Month – INTERVIEW – Squirrel Girl and Silly Cat Videos…

Welcome to the month of July and with the summer truly starting to come into action we thought it would be a great time to talk to an improv troupe that actually formed due to the improv community using the online world! Yes you heard that correctly!

Don’t Mess is a global all women and non-binary improv team and their shows explore the world of zoom meetings because who knew there could be so much fun that could be created from this world! The troupe are performing currently all throughout July and I couldn’t wait to find out more about them. Today we end our month of interviews in the traditional way – the quick fire round!

If you could be any animal what would it be and why?

Llaura: A cat – I love my sleep and I love my food, so being able to eat and nap as often as I want  and not worry about work or bills would be a dream come true!

Simone: A Malaysian pen-tailed tree shrew… look it up…

Brenna: Dog

Fiona: Wolf

Sarah: A giraffe – super tall, gentle, gangly!

M.J: A male peacock because it is not at all my personality.

Karla: Sloth, because I basically am!

Who is your favorite superhero and why?

Simone: Batman – the gadgets, the butler, the cave…

Karla: The Golden Girls – because they are so insightful

Sarah: Admin Man – he has staplers for hands and knows what to do with a highlighter. I made him up.

Brenna: I can’t land on one. I don’t really dig super heroes. Does Godzilla count?

M.J: Storm from X-Men. She controls the weather.

Fiona: Squirrel Girl – she defeated Thanos twice!

Llaura: Invisible Woman as she was the first superheroine in the Marvel series but also as someone who likes to “people watch” I think being invisible would make this so much easier and less awkward for both parties!

If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

Brenna: A comedy, and I’d probably be played by a puppet or it would be animated, so, my voice actor would hopefully be Maria Bamford.

Fiona: Horror and Gwendoline Christine

Sarah: Definitely a comedy! Who would play me……argh I don’t know!

Llaura: I’d love to see my life played out as a gritty French cinema format directed By Mathieu Kassovitz who directed my favourite movie of all time La Haine. Rather than have someone play me I think it would be more interesting if the film was through “my eyes” so that you never need to see who is actually playing me.

Karla: Comedy for sure! I would love for Melissa McCarthy to play me.

Simone: Tragic rom-com… Minnie Driver

M.J: Viola Davis would play me and it would be a psychological thriller.

If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go and why?

Fiona: America to be with my partner

Llaura: Antarctica. I want to visit all of the continents in my lifetime and I fear that this one will be the first to no longer be available to travel to in the not so distant future.

Simone: French Polynesia – I’ve always wanted to go there. I love the sea and it looks like heaven.

Brenna: Liverpool England because so many of my friends live there.

Karla: Dingle, Ireland for the relaxing atmosphere, good craic and gorgeous scenery

M.J: Antarctica because no one can really go there.

Sarah: America – to visit some of my Don’t Mess buddies in San Diego, LA and North Carolina!

What would you do with your “15 minutes” of fame?

Simone: Would I earn any money? In that case I’d buy a house overlooking the sea…

Fiona: Run a RPG session on a big network

Llaura: I’d probably be so busy working on the next project that the time would pass me by completely without noticing.

Sarah: Squander it with relish.

Karla: Share it with others who deserve it

M.J: Highlight the need for basic human needs like water, food and shelter for everyone.

Brenna: Probably squander it.

What is one item you could NEVER live without?

Llaura: A pen – I love a good pen!

Karla: Cell phone

Brenna: Glasses

Fiona: Sadly, it’s my phone

Simone: Conditioner.

Sarah: My notebook, in which for some reason over lockdown I’ve catalogued very lockdown improv show/class done (nearly 500 now……!).

Last time you laughed very hard out loud?

Karla: When my chihuahua pug mix throws a temper tantrum

Simone: This morning, watching a silly cat video.

Fiona: During a show rehearsal with ‘Trash Kingdom’ – Queen’s City Comedy’s womxn/nonbinary team

M.J: With my daughter telling her how it took me years to figure out how to use a tampon properly.

Llaura: About a week ago I was watching a Scottish colleague recite some Scottish phrases but every time she did she put on an English accent! You might have had to be there but it was crying from laughter!

Sarah: All the time!

Brenna: During the last episode of Disaster Time I was in. Our cast is very funny. Particularly this time it was Andi Fei using a voice modulator like a champ.

What is your favorite movie quote?

Simone: My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!

Brenna: “No wire hangers, ever”

Fiona: Alas, your Mr. Takagi did not see it that way… so he won’t be joining us for the rest of his life. (Love Alan Rickman!)

Sarah: ‘We’re gonna need a bigger boat’.

Llaura: “Never trust anything that can bleed for a week and not die.” From In The Company Of Men. It’s a very misogynistic quote but there is also some truth there I feel.

Karla: Strange Things are afoot at the Circle K
