Tell us about:
Your latest single you have released:
Tiam: Sky & Stars is quite an unusual single, crossfading the sound of Depeche Mode with EDM and darkwave. It’s upbeat but still a rather dark pop song.
Baz: I would say it’s a cheerful summer song for which we have also recently recorded a music video. The video will be published on YouTube and Facebook Watch as soon as it is finished editing. The single is available on Spotify and on all other major streaming platforms.
Your first single and how you felt when it was released:
Baz: Sky & Stars is actually our first single as WinterBeach. It was a feeling of happiness when we released it and it’s nice that the song has received so many good reviews from both the press and fans
Tiam: Yes it was exciting! Especially as it was released by a label abroad, The Animal Farm in London. I’m very proud of this song.
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:
Angel: A good question and a difficult one to answer actually. But If I were to choose just one it would be “Playing Dead”. I love the lyrics in that song and it reflects some of our times most important challenges. What do we do with the world that we are handing over to our children…?
Baz: Playing Dead is also my personal favorite in addition to Sky & Stars. The song Playing Dead has also been very well received, it also has the music video for the song, which is available on YouTube.
Tiam: I like all 7 songs on the LP. Although one always tends to favor the latest songs, which are Playing Dead and Sky & Stars, I have to say that I also love older songs like Star Wars and Dark Minds!
Your favourite song to play live:
Tiam:Oh,playing live in front of an audience is just a vague memory right now, but I always love playing “Star Wars”, as the vocal line suits me perfectly! Actually, we have never performed our new singles (Sky & Stars and Playing Dead), but I expect these to be fantastic to play live as well!
Baz:My favorite live song is Dark Minds as I love playing it’s drum beat. I am very happy with the groove in that song.
Your most emotional track:
Baz:We are Alone is a strong love song that is about one wanting to return to the relationship after a previous relationship.
Tiam: In fact there are a lot of emotion in all our songs, but different types of emotions; like a mix of happiness, despair and joy. Without emotions the lyrics tend to be less memorable.
The best lyric you have ever written:
Tiam:I love when a text can be interpreted in several ways. Like in our song “Star Wars”. I believe it’s about our personal internal wars (?), but at the same time it can be about the “silent wars” between a couple in a dysfunctional relationship? Or just a cool song about Star Wars and the love of George Lucas movies.
Baz: I am very pleased with the lyrics to the title track Playing Dead, as it also can be interpreted in several ways.
Angel: Well it must be Drama King, as it fits perfectly as my own autobiography.
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
Baz I am usually nervous before I go on stage. The nervousness passes quickly and after the first song the feeling is ecstatic.
Tiam: I shake like a rattle snake on the verge of coma!
The hardest track to play live:
Baz: I do not think any of our songs are difficult to play live.
Angel:And that’s not because our songs are too simple, he he. Baz I just too good!
Tiam:As a vocalist, I must say the hardest songs are the ones where the vocal keys are very low. When you play live it’s extremely difficult to sing low when the music is loud! So the verses in Playing Dead, Dark Minds and Drama King could be problematic at some gigs. On the other hand, I would say that Star Wars probably is the best song to perform live, vocal wise
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
Baz: Snare drum, bass drum pedal, drum key, cymbals and drumsticks.
Tiam: Baz is always very practical… Personally I need my hairwax, leather bracelets and green sunglasses
Angel: I never leave my house without my Korg, Roland, Yamaha and Novation synths. In addition, I bring a number of VSTi instruments like Nexus and Spire in addition to Sylenth1.
Describe your fans in three words:
Baz: Musical, positive and cool
Tiam: Young, old and middle-aged
Angel:bDedicated, fascinated and elevated.
A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:
Tiam: It must be “Hunting High and Low” by A-ha! The perfect song. I loved it the first time I heard it and still do 35 years later! The song is constantly evolving. From a downright ballad mood in the opening to building up to enormous heights at the end. Fantastic Paul, Mags & Morts!
Baz: Open your Heart with Madonna. A cool, catchy and good song from the 80’s.
What we can look forward to from your band this year:
Baz: First, the music video for «Sky & Stars». In addition, we will be working on new songs and hopefully concerts when we are done with the corona.
Tiam: Personally I’m looking forward to our next chapter; writing new songs. We have learned a lot from the feedback received during the release of this LP and now have a very distinct picture of how a WinterBeach song should sound in the future!
