I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month I thought we would take a different approach to this article and instead of focussing on just one band, instead I wanted to focus on a particular subject – the duet. I am fascinated by the world of the duets and this will not be the only month that we will have a look at this subject. I love the way that when two musicians collaborate the videos see bigger, better and bolder and they really go into overdrive when it comes to the editing. So this month we will take a look at just a handful, but because there are so many I adore this will be a topic we will visit again in the future.
Kids – Robbie Williams Feat Kylie Minogue
Why did you choose this particular video?
I remember watching this video when I was a kid and I found it amazing because it felt like a production, you could tell that there was a lot put into the video because of the fact it was two of pops biggest names. I think I have said before that some music videos have this sort of ‘magic’ effect where when you are young it amazes you and you wonder how they did it – well this was one of those videos for me as it really was pretty snazzy back then.
So, what is the narrative?
There is not a narrative as such it is more about the partnership between Robbie and Kylie and there are a lot of shots focussed on them being flirty and dancing with each other.
Favourite parts of the video?
The music video opens with a sequence of Extreme Close Up shots which invite you into this intimate world – as a kid I didnt really recognise the symbolism for this but I alway thought it was a very unusual way to open a video. When this video was released, both Robbie and Kylie were big in the pop world so these sort of sexy shots would of sent their fans and the rumours about them wild.
The one thing I used to love about this video was the shots of them walking up the stairs as they light up. I just adored the production values of it and it really does what a good duet music video should have – drama. I love the angles of the camera, the lighting and the way it creates this theatre experience.
One thing you notice throughout the video is that there are these shots that remind you of mirrors. The camera angle and the lighting in this particular shot is really effective and again brings drama to the shot. It again brings this sort of intimacy to the video and it heightens the sexy look with this mirror effect.
The final set of shots I really like is these bright lit backgrounds that I always thought looked like mirrored tunnels. They are so different to the rest of the video and I feel give this connotation of them feeling excited and golden metaphorically.
