Tell us about:
The latest single you released:
Joey: With “Diggin in the dirt” we wanted to write a fun, light-hearted song that was also a realistic and authentic expression of the hardships we have all faced through lockdown – the widely felt loneliness, disconnect and frustration. We really feel as though the first step to overcoming emotional difficulty is to express honestly how you feel. Our hope was for the track to provide some form of release for people. I think the video will at least give them something to smile about!
Your first single and how you felt when it was released:
Buzz T.: Our cover version of Trent Reznor’s “Hurt” was our very first release and although we didn’t really promote it, it was received really well with over one million streams so far. The release was a very special moment for us – it was only a few months before that I heard Kira sing for the first time when the initial idea of “Mad Hatter’s Daughter” was born. So yeah, it was a very special moment!
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:
Kira: On our upcoming album we have a track called “Love You Alone” which is a beautiful track about a painful theme. It’s about a couple that broke up who came to understand that it was the right thing to do despite the pain. It explores the idea, the differences and similarities between loving yourself and then loving someone else. We wrote this track during a creative session in London right before lockdown and chose Jarki Monno to be the featured artist – a perfect match.
Your favourite song to play live:
Kira: It’s hard to say. Every song has a story and a lot of emotion behind it. I still love to sing “Hurt” because that’s where it all began. “Sweet Home” was the first song we wrote ourselves that was played on the radio and it’s always amazing to sing it and see the audience sing with me. I’m really excited to perform all the new tracks too and see how people react to them – we have some really powerful ones coming!
Your most emotional track:
Kira: When I was pregnant with our first child, we wrote the track “Best Of You” for our baby girl. Before your child is born you have all of these hopes and dreams of who they might become and you want to give them only the best sides of yourselves as parents. And then they just come along and surpass all of your wildest dreams and expectations and they are just simply who they are.
The best lyric you have ever written:
Buzz T.: Joey wrote a line in “Wolves” which is one of our next singles that I absolutely love:
I find it despicable the individual feels so invisible now
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
Kira: I actually get very nervous each time. It’s a funny mixture of joy and “Ah fuck it, I can’t do it, let’s go home”! But after the first song I relax into it and then I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. It’s a privilege to be able to do the thing you love.
The hardest track to play live:
Buzz T.: It actually depends on the setting of the show. We perform as a duo, trio and sometimes as a four piece. I find it personally the most challenging to play as a duo because I have to jump between playing foot drums and guitar simultaneously or playing the piano plus singing backing vocals. I’m not good at multitasking, so it’s always a challenge… but easy is boring 😉
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
Kira: We’re parents of two kids and they’re always travelling with us. So most essential is a babysitter I guess
Describe your fans in three words:
Kira: Loving, Faithful, Individuals
A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:
Kira: We’re all big fans of Sam Fender and one of our favourite tracks of the last few years has been “Dead Boys” – such a great track!
What we can look forward to from your band this year:
Joey: In October we’ll be playing in a few select venues in the UK, in intimate settings such as Cavern Club, Liverpool and The Green Note in Camden. We’d love to see you there, these shows are going to be something special. We’re also travelling to Dubai in November to play a few shows and of course we’ll release a few more singles before we drop our album next year, so stay tuned!
