The Magic Of The Music Video! – Marianas Trench Month – Celebrity Status

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are looking at the band that is one of my favourites and their music videos played a huge role in why I ended up loving this group as they were so engaging and also very entertaining. I initially came across the band when I was listening to a Spotify Radio and the song Stutter came on. I found it so unique and from that song and from watching the video I started to become a fan. The more music they released, the more videos I watched the more of a fan I became. I have managed to see them live twice and even interview one of my music heroes Josh Ramsay for this site which was so surreal. So this month we celebrate the creativity of this band.

Marianas Trench – Celebrity Status

Why did you choose this particular video?

I chose this video because it is one that is just quite fun to watch and every time I have watched it, I have always ended up enjoying it. I like the way that they parody the different things on television and it creates a fun all round music video. I also like the way that it has many different editing styles. There is so much to talk about in this video as well.

So, what is the narrative?

Josh has woken up in the middle of the night because he cannot sleep and then he starts to imagine him and his band mates are in all these random adverts and television shows, parodying some well known shows.

Favourite parts of the video?

When you first watch this video you are welcomed with this establishing shot which sets up the whole video and the location of where this is all taking place. Josh cannot sleep so turns the television on in the middle of the night. I really like the lighting of this shot and how the lighting is placed as the rest of the video is very bright and colourful in contrast. I really like the fact that his outfit also sort of blends into the background to make the audience realise this is just a small factor of the video. I like the fact there is no editing in this shot which makes it really realistic as the rest of the video is very fast paced and consists of lots of high paced edits to connote the changing of the channel.

When the music starts you are welcomed to a lot of fast paced shots to show the changing of a television and in contrast to the first shot they are very brightly coloured. I think this is a fantastic idea – whilst they are styled in the same way as the television show or adverts they are advertising I think it creates this really great metaphor that when you cannot sleep the television just seems so bright to you. There are so many clips to this video that it is has been hard to select only a few to talk about but I chose this clip of the 90210 parody because there are some really slick video transitions that are fast and blurred to create this uplifting and cheery style of clip. These sort of teen shows always made people the same age wish they were part of that world and these sort of editing styles reflect that.

One thing I really like about this video is the way that the graphics are really simple to reflect the type of television shows that they are parodying. They may not be a huge part of the video but I always think it is important that when graphics are used they are used in a way that is similar to the original adverts and whilst they may look simple they really bring the footage to life. There are many examples of these graphics throughout the video and they are so fun to look out for as some of them are not as easy to read straight away.

Throughout the song there are these video transitions that are relevant to a turning over of a television, they are really quick and really subtle but it gives this great journey through the channels and really is effective throughout. It is a really simple effect that also reminds you of Josh who cannot sleep and flicking through the channels to try and find something to get him sleepy and the way that the channel changing gets so erratic reflects the fast pace of the mind when it is over tired.
