The Magic Of The Music Video! – Sum 41 Month – In Too Deep

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are looking at the band Sum 41 because their music videos were a big part of my teenage years. I used to find their music videos fascinating as they had the perfect balance of Punk Rock and Comedy and I would watch their videos over and over again. I am sure one of their albums came with a DVD with the videos on as well. They were a band that you would get excited to see their music videos as they were so good and that is why I wanted to write about them as these videos I have seen sooooo many times that I feel they are one of the major impacts in why I look up to music videos so much as a great form of edit. So over the next few weeks we are going to look at some of my favourites.

Sum 41 – ln Too Deep

Why did you choose this particular video?

This was one of the first (actually I think it was the first) video I ever saw of this group, it was played so many times and I am sure I had a DVD of this music video because I remember watching this one alot. I loved the comedy and when I was watching these I wasn’t really into Blink-182 at this time so it was sort of the first time I had really witnessed comedy in a music video that is why I adored it so much.

So, what is the narrative?

The band head to a swimming pool to enter a diving competition against the Jocks and end up winning. Everyone in the crowd then jumps into the swimming pool to celebrate.

Favourite parts of the video?

The first shot that I really like in this video is the opening one the way that it sort of tricks the eye that it has done a 180 shot and in that time the guys have changed for the pool. It is such a simple editing or production technique but it really is very effective and automatically reels you into the video. Also the reason that I really like this shot is that it puts you straight into the narrative and you can understand straight away where the boys are and that is very clever. I like the fact as well that the car is playing one of their other tracks in the background.

I think it is really interesting to look at the ways that the two sets of divers are portrayed throughout, we will come to the Sum 41 boys later but first we will look at the ‘jocks’. They have all these simple camera and edited shots together to create this sense of ‘power’ that this team have and shows their professionalism with the way that the shots are slick as well. The thing to point out is the red swimwear – this is a colour used a lot in cinematography to connote the enemy and this is no different, again, making the narrative easy to follow.

The audience are used a lot in this video to sort of push the narrative along and when a different swimmer approaches the board a lot of the time it will have a close up shot of one of the audience either trying to cheer them on or distract the jocks. They are only quick simple edits but they really work and create this really powerful narrative of the fact that the audience are on the side of the band. I think that is why this video is so iconic because it has these audience shots I think it really allows the viewer to feel like they are part of this bands narrative.

The thing that makes this video great is the comedy factor that is created in the bands dives in the music video. The editing and camera shots are so different to the rest of the video and they are so emphasised on the humour which makes them really fun. All of the band do not take the diving seriously and they all dive in these really extravagant ways. At the end Stevo takes to the diving board and there is this fun parody where he takes of his swimming shorts to reveal a similar style to the jocks to sort of humour them and make the viewer believe he is going to be the big finale and it doesn’t fail.
