Tell us about:
Your latest single you have released:
Together We Are is a reminder in these difficult and turbulent times that although we are miles apart locked in our 4 walls, we still have a strong connection with our close ones that only grows bigger. The thought of meeting again in person with everyone we miss should help us go through these times and become stronger.
Your first single and how you felt when it was released:
Our first single was called “Believe in Tonight” and it was released in September 2019. I didn’t really know what feedback to expect from the listeners as it was my first time doing electronic production as I only used to play bass guitar before. Nevertheless, the reception from the audience was great, it was supported by BBC music introducing London and a lot of people reached out to me on social media. That’s when I realised that we are on the right track and we should keep pushing new music.
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:
To be honest, my favourite song is still not released and it will be out in the second half 2021. It was written during the latest lockdown and I wrote literally over 2 evenings. I feel that it expresses really the experience of being locked within 4 walls and how the life becomes a neverending groundhog day.
Your favourite song to play live:
The latest single Together We Are is a lot of fun playing live as it is quite energetic and easy track and we have received the feedback from our audience who watched us online that they love it as well.
Your most emotional track?
I always try to express my emotions and anxieties through the lyrics. Our previous single How I Was Wrong has really personal and emotional lyrics and it felt like being naked in front of a room full of people. However, I find that the more personal the song is, the more people resonate with it.
The best lyric you have ever written:
I really love the lyrics of “Stay Awake”. The interesting thing is that I wrote it back in 2012 when I was still living in the dormitory and studying in the uni in Kiev. Although it was 8 years ago and I was a completely different person back then, the lyrics still feel very relevant and honest in this crazy world in 2021.
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
Sleepwoka is a really young project and it was created right before the global pandemic hit us. The first gig that was supposed to happen in April 2020 has been postponed indefinitely and so we never had a chance to get on a real stage. We were, however, able to make several live online performances but it is never the same as having the personal connection with your audience.
The hardest track to play live:
How I Was Wrong is quite hard to play live as the vocal melody is not that straightforward. Liza who is playing keyboard in the live shows finds it quite interesting and challenging to play the main riff from Stay Awake. It’s quite funky and it’s hard to be in the tempo all the time
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
Although we haven’t had a chance to go on tour yet, we already have a good understanding on what gear we need to perform live. Liza always has her Nord keyboard that she uses for all the songs and I always use a sampler Octotrack (and sometimes use it as a midi controller if I use other synths in the show). Octotrack is a super cool machine that not only plays all the backing track samples, but also allows you to mess around with those samples while playing live, change effects etc. It’s a great tool for live performances.
Describe your fans in three words:
Art loving hipsters
A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:
Without a doubt it is Shodowplay by Joy Division. I really believe that it has the deepest lyrics I have ever heard and it’s crazy to realise that Ian Curtis was only 22 years old when he wrote it. Lyrics are strange and personal which I really love.
What we can look forward to from your band this year:
2021 is going to be pretty busy for our project. There are 3 more singles to be released and at least 2 music videos. The new songs are really great and I am super excited to share it with our fans. 2020 was a rollercoaster and let’s hope that by the end of 2021 we will have more opportunities to meet our fans in the real world.
