The Magic Of The Music Video! – Adam Lambert Month – Velvet

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are taking a look at a musician that is really talented and I actually came across him very quickly after American Idol through his music video for his debut single. I think it popped up one day on my Youtube home page and I clicked it and I was mesmerized. I love a great video with huge production and For Your Entertainment had it all. I watched it on repeat so many times I was addicted to the song and the video. I am so happy that Adam is huge today because he deserves it he is such a talented singer and I love seeing what music he brings out next. His videos are always good fun to watch and always have a lot to watch both in stye and editorially so lets celebrate Adam this month

Adam Lambert – Velvet

Why did you choose this particular video?

This is one of his most recent videos and I think it is good to end the month to have a look that even after all these years his music videos are still pretty unique. They still have some interesting editing choices and some interesting cinematography.

So, what is the narrative?

The lyrics of the song metaphorically compare the perfect lover to the fabric velvet. The video is set out like a fashion shopping channel and magazine and takes you through all the different ‘looks’ that feel right to different people.

Favourite parts of the video?

Even though this is a more modern song then the ones that we have looked at in recent weeks, I really like the fact that the light flares still make an appearance. It was only when I started to analyse these videos that I noticed this was a common theme throughout and they work really well. These flares may be a lot more subtle but they are still really effective. The fact there there is only a tiny amount of light flare makes me wonder if it is a metaphor for growing up both physically and musically.

The thing I like the most about this video is the graphics and the way that they are used. When you are first introduced to each of these shots they look like they are the front of a magazine however the thing I like about them is that the models in the videos keep breaking the fourth wall by walking in front of the headline text and changing the perspective of what we originally envisioned when we see it and it sort of feels like it relates to the meaning behind the song as well.

The thing I like about this video is that things develop throughout the song and whilst the flare is evident at the beginning they become prominent again near the end of the video which makes me really happy. I love the way light flares are used in Adam’s videos and the way they are used near the end of the video is very different. They have an element of blur to them and they track Adam when he dances and it has this wonderful effect to it. After this set of clips the light flares are more visible throughout and it is so fun to see.
