My Own Soul’s Warning
This is the opening track on the latest album by The Killers and it opens up gradually with an electronic soft sound that sounds like a light wind passing by. The vocals of Brandon come in to create this mystical and dreamlike sense, it sort of feels like it is slowly welcoming you into their world. The song is constructed of electronic sounds and a repetitive drum beat that creates this melodic feel and sets up the style of the album. When the Bridge kicks in the hints of the familiar Killers sound kicks in and then is in full effect in the chorus. The chorus is punchy and really sets the ball rolling for the rest of the album. The melody that follows the chorus is focused on the sounds of the keyboard and it is an uplifting tone.
Dying Breed
This song starts with a really funky style bassline that feels sassy with an attitude. It is a very different sound to what we have heard so far on the album and it is automatically engages you. Just like the opening tracks the band allows the music construction to grown and get thicker before they introduce the vocals. Throughout the song the bassline starts to slowly fade away into this really uplifting electronic sound to create a complex hearing experience. There is one thing you can guarantee with The Killers – their music takes you on a journey.
Fire In Bone
This song is all about the drum beat it has a fun funky sound to it that compliments the melodic mash up of the lyrics and the electronic sound. This is is a toe tapping style song and really highlights the talents of this band – taking a style of sound and then taking it to the next level. The musical interludes that happen between the vocals have a sort of eighties feel to it that creates this really interesting element to the mix. The hint of the acoustic electro riff throughout creates a sense of country genre and adds another level of complexity to the song.
When The Dreams Run Dry
This song starts with a very basic slow drum beat and a stripped back sound to really focus on the vocals of Brandon, the opening lyrics are ‘Can’t hear myself think’ and this sort of feels like a musical metaphor for this. This is a slower song on the track and it really has a lot of different elements to this song and has a really punchy chorus that contrasts the simple sounds of the verses. The Electronic sound is predominant in this track and when it changes tempo and style it really packs a punch.
