Celebrating Comediasians Month – INTERVIEW – Meet Nikita

All this month we are celebrating the improv troupe Comediasians. There is fifteen members of the team (and ever increasing) so we thought it was only right we got to know a few of them that little bit better! So each week we will be talking to a different member of the team to find out a little bit more about them. Today we talk to Yiannis.

Hello how long have you been improvising?
Nearly  2 years

How did you get into improv?
I was watching an improv jam in awe and stitches, I wanted to be ‘that person’ on stage who was so confident and having so much fun.

What is your favourite warm up game?

‘I am, I am, I keep’. Or you might be more familiar with ‘I am a Tree’. I’ve heard different names for this game, but essentially one player jumps in the middle and says who they are and takes a pose, e.g ‘I am planet Earth’. A second player adds to this image and says ‘I am global warming’. A third player completes the image and says ‘I am a tree’. The first player then decides which one to keep, either the Tree or Global Warming, then they and the player not chosen leaves the image. The remaining player repeats what they are, e.g ‘I am a Tree’ and the game continues with two more players jumping in to make a new image. I find this game great for getting out of my head and body and getting those creative ideas flowing.

How would you describe your personal sort of improv?
I like to play with status, it’s a fun way to play against stereotypes. It also helps to drive the scene and see the characters get emotionally caught up in the relationships they have.

What is your favourite style of improv and why?
I do like Short-form. I just love the energy and fast-paced action of the scenes. It definitely brings out the spontaneity in me. There is somewhat a clowning aspect to it that you can really have fun with.
