As you may know, I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are looking at a pop star that growing up I would see a lot of their videos as they were on constant repeat on the music channels. I like Britney Spears music but her video were something that amazed me, I have talked about this time and time again on here that America always looked like this amazing place that was million a miles away that was so different to the UK. I found American Pop stars and bands music sort of had this impact and effect on me that it made me wish I lived in America as I always thought life would be perfect if I lived there. These music videos by American stars sort of had the Hollywood effect on me and hypnotised me.
There are so many music videos by Britney that are legendary and there are a few I have seen so many times that growing up they definitely had an impact on my editing and what I wanted from life – so lets have a look at them this month!
Britney Spears – Everytime
Why did you choose this particular video?
This song or this video is not one of my favourite Britney songs but I think that it is important to talk about it as it is so different to her other songs. I remember the first time I saw this as a kid I hadn’t seen a music video like this one before and I think they way that it was edited and the story it was telling was really important and was done in a very clever way.
So, what is the narrative?
Behind the scenes Britney and her partner are not talking and having constant arguments but because of their fame the paparazzi won’t leave them alone. Britney’s character goes in the bath and tries to kill herself by drowning and the boyfriend tries to save her. You realise by the end of the video that it doesn’t happen and she is thinking about the outcome if she did.
Favourite parts of the video?
The shots of the paparazzi at the top and the way that it is edited together creates an emphasis on the claustrophobic vibe that they bring, they way that the camera angle is very tight and makes you feel surrounded by the cameras and among them are a very strong introduction shot into the world that we are entering.
The colour gradient again is used throughout the video to tell a thousand words, they are very green and beige in their styles and it could be a metaphor for the fact that not everything is amazing as you think they are for a celebrity. If you look in some shots as well, the mis-en-scene plays a huge part in this – look at the bathroom for instance, all the bottles are green, white or beige.
The only thing in the whole music video that is vivid with colour is the boyfriends shirt – red usually connotes love, passion, hatred and death but in this video whilst you think at first he is bad he ends up actually being the connotation of love as he ‘saves’ Britney. The fact that he has black in his shirt as well could connote that their love has a dark side as well.
The use of light is another strong factor in this video and the part when Britney is running down the hallway is a really interesting transition again focussing on the way bright light creates innocence in a video. Also the use of slow motion in this shot is used very effectively as well, it sort of creates the connotation that time and life slows down to everyone effected and it is a really interesting way to see how the pace of the video effective changes and get more dramatic and serious just by this technique.
