As you may know, I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are looking at a pop star that growing up I would see a lot of their videos as they were on constant repeat on the music channels. I like Britney Spears music but her video were something that amazed me, I have talked about this time and time again on here that America always looked like this amazing place that was million a miles away that was so different to the UK. I found American Pop stars and bands music sort of had this impact and effect on me that it made me wish I lived in America as I always thought life would be perfect if I lived there. These music videos by American stars sort of had the Hollywood effect on me and hypnotised me.
There are so many music videos by Britney that are legendary and there are a few I have seen so many times that growing up they definitely had an impact on my editing and what I wanted from life – so lets have a look at them this month!
Britney Spears – Oops! I Did It Again
Why did you choose this particular video?
I mean we cannot talk about Britney without mentioning this video as it is so iconic and when I was growing up it was videos like this that created the magic for me that music videos had. It was so creative, out of this world and so unique that it was things like this that captured my imagination.
So, what is the narrative?
A spaceman goes to Mars on a new expedition and comes across Britney Spears new album and then he discovers a space ship that is owned by ‘alien’ Britney.
Favourite parts of the video?
Ok, we firstly have to talk about the graphics – we have to remember that this was early noughties but the effects that they put into the space theme is pretty incredible. If you take it for what year it was made and look at it, you can tell that a lot of money was put into this video. As a Motion Graphic Designer I really like this video as you can see the amount of work that went into it and it is pretty impressive.
We have to talk about the transitions in this video again, just like Born To Make You Happy, this video again uses transitions in really random areas – there are video transitions on the same shot – I can understand it in this situation as it is meant to be happening in space so it could connote the surrealism of what is happening when you meet an ‘alien’. The transition that first catches my eye when re-watching this video is one that creates a mirror like effect on Britney singing.
The editing in this video is very fast pace as the cuts react to the beats of the song which is a very pop thing to do, it also works well with this music video as it makes it more pacier and upbeat and fun. We have to talk about the cheesiest part of the music video because it is also one of the sections with one of the key parts of editing / motion graphics in it. Before Britney does the talking part about the bottom of the ocean, there is a fast shot with Britney spinning through the air where her outfit transitions into a white shirt and black skirt.
The transition and the spinning in the air is a really effective (even if silly) way to portray the movement of time. If you really watch that part of the video frame by frame it is a really slick part of editing. Also, we have to mention the part when the spaceman takes his head off and his head does a weird expansion – I mean, how silly but also clever is that. It may come across as silly but it is such a short section of the music video, it connotes a message in a few seconds.
