Day 6 – A Book That Makes You Sad
NAME OF BOOK: The Penguin Lessons, Tom Michell

penguinIt is not a normal thing that I read books that are about people looking after animals as pets but I went into the shop The Works and this book was only £3 so I thought I would give it a try after reading the synopsis and the reviews being really positive. I started reading it and enjoyed the sweet story laid out in front of me about a penguin being saved and being looked after.

The book throughout tells lots of fun stories and it en-captivates you with the story about a man and his penguin and whilst I am in two minds throughout the book a lot of it I start to enjoy the story laid out before me.  A lot of people enjoy this book and the stories that is talks about and I did up to a point. However my opinions about this book changed halfway through.

Whilst throughout the book you start to think that the writer did a lovely thing looking after a penguin, near the end my opinions dramatically change and I actually start to hate reading this book that is factual.

The penguin ends up dying, it has been a while since I read it but I remember it was something to do with the fact he left it with friends when he went travelling and it died in the heat outside. Again I cannot remember the complete section mainly because I have tried to block it out and secondly because I wasn’t a fan.

I remember this outcome made me feel very angry and sad at the same time because of the fact the penguin died. He made so much effort to look after the penguin but then the opportunity to travel happened and he left the penguin and it made me not happy. I am a huge fan of penguins so this book didn’t go down well with me.
