The Bareback Kings – INTERVIEW – Quick Fire Round

This month we are super excited to be going behind the scenes of the world of Drag Improv with two of the biggest acts on the scene – Dragprov and The Bareback Kings. Every week we are going to talk to both groups to find out just how much goes into creating a successful set of shows

march 2020

This morning, we talk to a troupe that is made up of Brent, Dirk, Gary and Seb or Francesca, Alice, Rebecca and Jules. The Bareback Kings were founded in 2017 and since then their popularity keeps on growing. They have performed in London, other parts of the UK and even New York. I haven’t yet had a chance to have a proper good catch up with the team so I was excited to be going behind the scenes. We end off the interview in good old classic tradition – the quick fire round.

QUICK FIRE ROUND

If you could have any three people (dead or alive) over for dinner – who would they be?

Francesca: I would invite Harriet Tubman, Lee Miller and my great grandmother Rose, who was a Roma woman. They are all intriguing and strong women who I think I could learn a lot from. Also I reckon Harriet and Lee were probably into boogying, which I love!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Alice: Don’t feel other people’s feelings for them.

Your performance on stage tonight is not your worth as a human being (nor is anything).

And of course, “if you can’t love yourself then how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else.” The thing is self-love is not what I thought it was for a long time, when I took it to mean constantly masturbating. Just kidding! Self-love is about doing what is actually right for yourself and that might be a ‘treat’ like a massage but it might be eating green vegetables and having an early night. It might be not going out but resting. And actually the more you treat yourself well, the better you feel, not the other way around! The feeling doesn’t come first. The brutal practicalities do. Self-care leads to self-respect and from there who knows where you can go!!! Amazing stuff.

Get therapy. If you think you don’t need it, you definitely need it.

That was waaaaay too earnest wasn’t it?

Do you have any pets?

Rebecca: I don’t have a pet but I get oddly giddy at the idea of getting a rabbit. I had one when I was younger and Elmyra-ed the shit out of him.

If you could be from any other decade (or era), which would it be??

Jules: No other era has as much freedom and equality for women (although it’s still a work in progress), ASOS, or Jonny Woo. So I’ll stick here thanks. I would love to see London when it was just a few villages and fields. No tube WiFi though.

If you had to have a tattoo to represent improv what would you have and why?

Francesca: I would have the words “The gift of the unplanned is the present of presence” does what it says on the tin innit?!

What’s on your music playlists right now?

Alice: I’m currently obsessed with the song House On Fire by Sia. It’s a song to fall in love or to feel passionate about something to. Feel it deep within your loins. I’m also having a bit of a Radiohead renaissance, why not? It’s never not cool to immerse yourself in ennui. And I have absolutely jumped on the Lizzo bandwagon. Isn’t she amazing? Seb would say his favourite band is Sigur Ros but really it’s Backstreet Boys.

Who would play you in the movie of your life?

Rebecca: Well, I would like it to be Greta Gerwig but, let’s be honest, it would more likely be Jon Heder in his Napoleon Dynamite character.

If you had one superpower, what would it be?

Jules: Instant drag transformation. And not getting my cardigan caught on door handles.
