The Magic Of The Music Video! – Fall Out Boy Month – Thnks Fr th Mmrs

As you may know, I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are looking at a band that I actually only really started to like BECAUSE of their music videos. I couldn’t really stand their music when they first came out but then I started to watch their videos and it was much after Under The Cork Tree came out but much before the next album, I became a fan but this happened because of the videos (and still am as this site is dedicated to one of my favourite set of lyrics by them) – Fall Out Boy.

Fall Out Boy – Thnks Fr th Mmrs

Why did you choose this particular video?

I was addicted to this song and this video – I couldn’t stand the monkeys but there are a lot of cool shots in this video if you ignore them. I felt I had to include this video because I was addicted to it so much. I only found out recently that the woman is Kim Kardashian!

So, what is the narrative?

Monkeys are in charge of Fall Out Boys new music video.

Favourite parts of the video?

The shot that sort of opens up the whole video with the one strong light with the starry background and the band about to play. I love the colour of this shot and sets it up that this is going to be one epic video only to be interrupted by the ‘Director’ to say it’s rubbish.

I adore the fact again that the colours red and green are used predominantly as part of the Mis-en-scene, it is super effective and again has great impact on the emotions we are meant to feel whilst watching this video.

We have to talk about the branding – I think was still relevantly new in music videos to have but it is so clear that they had some sort of deal with this new Nokia phone because it is used so much and the editing makes me laugh. I can imagine the conversations in the edit room about how much they must be used and the shots they have to include.

I am not keen on the monkeys and animals being used – I know saying that I shouldn’t include it in this list but this song was a big part of my teenager years and videos like this I would constantly watch. Looking at it now I see the metaphors being made but still not keen on that and yes I know it is a big chunk of the video.
