Have you ever wanted To listen to a new band or musician and not sure where to start? Well, instead of listening to their commercial music, why not start with something off the album first! Today we look at the latest EP by musician IIan Rubin. You may be familiar with his other work as he plays drums for Angels and Airwaves, this is his solo work and definitely worth a listen – Part 1: Heart, The New Regime.
A Way To Feel Again
This song has a sort of electronic feel to it with an airy style of bass which creates a nice mystical feel that welcomes you and entices you to listen to where this song will lead. When the chorus starts and the guitars drop in and the electronic sound has a sense of distortion which sort of both connotes and emphasizes the emotions that are being expressed in the lyrics. It is quite a funky song that has elements that are hard to get out of your head once you head it. The beat that plays throughout is repetitive and sort of becomes an earworm.
Feel No Pain
This song is slightly different from the previous as it focusses on the guitar style of music more then the electronic. The chorus is the star of this song and the best thing about this is the way that the melody sorts of descends from a high tone to a lower to create yet again a sense of emotion and welcomes you into this world with open arms. The lyrics are a great part of this song and are worth a thorough listen. The emotion to this song lasts throughout and yet again is highlighted in the musical interlude.
Turning A Blind Eye
This song starts with a electronic beat that is intertwined with a heavy distorted guitar riff – this may be the theme of the EP but it is a great one as it feels fresh and different as there are not many bands that are using this style it stands out. If you listen to this song, throughout it feels like it has hints of a later My Chemical Romance song and to be it is reminiscent of songs from the Danger Days album (They don’t have any links to this band but this is what it reminds me of.) A great little song.
You Can Be (Whoever You Wanna Be)
This song is the last track on the EP and it sort of both compliments and brings all the sounds that have been evident throughout into a nice little finale track. This song doesn’t have the elements of the electronic sounds like the other songs do but this is not a bad thing, it empahsises the bands guitar and drum playing and that is a fun way to end the track.
