Hello tell us all about who you all are and three unknown facts about your troupe!
We’re the Improlectuals, a short form group based in Birmingham.
Unknown facts?
Robert Lane can not play the bassoon
Richard Baldwin is an expert juggler
Georgia Christodoulou does a very good Al Pacino impression
How did your troupe form?
Robert and Richard were both experienced improvisers who had crossed paths with various groups in the midlands, and found themselves living very close to each other in Birmingham. They decided to do a one off show to raise money for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The show got great feedback and they had a lot of fun, so decided to do some more.30 performances later it’s still a lot of fun.
How did you come up with the name of your troupe? Was it difficult?
Richard thought of it. He’s good at puns.
How did you get into improv?
Robert worked with Foghorn Unscripted doing long form shows including improvised Charles Dickens and Sherlock Holmes stories as well as improvised murder mysteries and musicals. Richard has a lot of experience performing improv and running Improv workshops and met Robert when both performed with WOW Impro’s family friendly show in Coventry. Georgia and Robert met whilst performing in Tell Me About Your Ex, a verbatim theatre piece that included improvised elements.
Tell us a little bit about the show that are happening this week?
It’s short form improv show, playing games and creating sketches from audience suggestions.
Our shows always feature Richard and Robert, plus a rotating cast of top improv performers.
It is the month of October, the month of halloween! What is the scariest suggestion you have been given on stage and why?
Brexit makes frequent appearances as a suggestion at the moment, and until you’ve started doing a bit about it you don’t know on which side of the argument the audience sits. Scary!
How do you warm up before a show?
We have some games that we like to use to get us focused (Ba Da Da, Mind Meld and a few we’ve made up) we spend some time setting up the room and making sure it feels like a comfortable space for performance and audience.
