Welcome to this months feature all about sitcoms and comedies, I watch a lot of them and always have done for as long as I can remember and looking back on them, I have learnt so many life lessons along the way. So I thought why not shine a light on them and share them with the world – some of them are important some of them are silly little things but I think it is always interesting to share. Today’s life lesson comes from – Miranda
Life Lesson Learnt: Embrace Your Weirdness!
I got into Miranda very late, I am not a fan of shows or sitcoms where they talk to the audience. When I moved up to Newcastle for a year, the first month I didn’t have internet so I would got to CEX and buy so many television shows on DVD. One of the shows I bought has Miranda and watching it from the start I eventually found my peace with the show and learnt to enjoy it.
There is one thing I feel the sitcom does exceptionally well and that is to create a positive show for women as it focuses on Miranda who is very similar to day to day women and that already is enlightening. The one thing I think it does extremely well is embraces the weirdness and the quirkiness of the normal female.
There are many times in life where the average woman or girl feels they are weird and feel shy to talk about silly things but this show spins it on it’s head and really embraces the wacky. Such silly things like fruit friends, and the silliness between Miranda and Stevi, make this show so great and it is one of the reasons it is so successful.
I do have one problem with this show though, throughout every season they embrace the weird and the random and then the man that Miranda starts to eventually date doesn’t stop calling her quirky – it drives me absolutely insane.
Whilst he is ‘technically’ using it as a term of endearment it starts to feel condescending and also sort of contradicts all the the work that was initially set up in the sitcom to celebrate the weird.
Let’s put this into perspective, if the lead was someone really hot like Jennifer Aniston and she had all the quirks and wacky side – she would have an endearing name as a pet name not quirky. However due to to the fact that Miranda is 6ft and clumsy it seems appropriate…. I know Miranda Hart wrote it but this really irritates me.
