NEW FEATURE: The Single Sessions – Junky Love, Nowhere To Go

Welcome to a brand new feature where we look at new singles coming onto the music scene. To celebrate the start of this feature we are going to start with a  London based psych/garage rock trio Junky Love and their fourth single that was released on Friday – Nowhere to Go

The song opens up with a really heavy bass line that a lot of modern songs tend to be missing and that is a pure highlight to hear. The bass is welcomed with a mix of an addictive drum beat that is common in rock intertwined with a dirty electric guitar riff. The one thing that I really like about this single is the fact that the bass is the star in of this musical ensemble, which is great.

The fact that the verses focus on the bass as the main musical strength means that you can really listen to the lyrics of the song. ‘I never wanna fall in love with the devil again, aching hearts are lost to shackles and chains ‘ is a lyric at the end of each verse sort of like a bridge that really sticks in your head and it’s the first lyric I really pay attention to. In the second verse there is the line  ‘I’m a jagged knife, I’m an empty soul’ which feels hauntingly poetic.

The lead singer and bassist, Axel describes that the lyrics are “about self medicating and substance abuse. As anxiety and mental health issues reign over our sanity, many of us seek to numb that pain away. A marriage of drugs and alcohol is often the painkiller we fall in love with.”

When you listen to the lyrics throughout the song you can hear these issues being raised and the change musically sort of feels like it reflects these emotions.

This song really highlights what is great about the London music scene, whilst the music feels a sense of rawness it is brought together in such a great way that it is a charm to listen to. The chorus is quite short but also highly addictive as the music dynamic changes and gets heavier musically and that is a fantastic element. The ending is fantastic mix up of all the elements in the song to create a finale you won’t want to miss.

If you are looking for a new single to listen to then you will enjoy this if you are a fan of bands that use music to create emotion whilst also producing a great rock song.
