Off The Record – ALBUM FOCUS – Strange Love, Simple Creatures

Have you ever wanted To listen to a new band or musician and not sure where to start? Well, instead of listening to their commercial music, why not start with something off the album first!  Today we look at an E.P from a new band from Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 and Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low. Since it is an E.P we will look at all the songs on it – Strange Love, Simple Creatures

Drug

This song has been described at the closest thing to what a Blink 182 and All Time Low collaboration would sound like and they are right. The song has a really addictive chorus that after one of two listens you will be singing along to, it really is a song that merges their sounds together and If you are not sure whether this new sound is for you then start with this song and ease yourself in.

Strange Love

This is the name of the EP and it is a song that is definitely one of the absolute highlights. The duo have described their genre as trash pop and I really like the sound that is defined in this song. The musical melody that is constructed in the bridge leading into the chorus is so addictivie and the slow build up with the drums leading into an electronic song is pure genius and very unique.

How to Live

This song is a tad darker then the two that precede it but that is a good thing. It feels like it has elements of plus 44 but the thing I adore about Simple Creatures is that then lyrics are evenly split there is no leader and this sort of duo sound and feel really creates something new and fresh whilst also bringing in small elements of the old. I feel if you want a comparison it’s like a song like Baby Come On by Plus 44 mixed with a song like Dirty Laundry by All time Low. Don’t let that fool you though it’s very different.

Adrenaline

This song yet again has a completely different sound and has more of an electric music vibe intertwined with a dirty pop sound. The lyrics are a clever use of connotations whilst having a killer hook in the chorus.

Ether

I think out of all the songs on this album this to Me sounds like it came off a Plus 44 album. For someone who was a fan of that very short lived band I really enjoy it as I feel it would of fitted so well in album 2 if there ever was one. The song is a lot mellow then others compared on this EP but the lyrics are dark with wonderful metaphors. If Plus 44 ever return I hope this would influence the style.

Lucy

I personally feel this is one of the weakest songs on the album. I feel that it has some strong parts such as the talking bridge but a lot of the other parts feel like they get lost in the electronic sounds. If this was an album it would definitely be the album track and not the single. I don’t understand why they made this the last song either.
