Show Of The Week – INTERVIEW – Rhinoceros’ Big Friday! January Stampede

This week we talk to an improv troupe that was formed through The Free Association. The troupe Rhinoceros are hosting their own show this week on the Friday at the London Improv Theatre from 7:30pm. This month they have guests Kathryn Bond, Homunculus and Freya Slipper appearing. I spoke to Philippa to find out all about it.

Hello Philippa tell us all about who you all are and a little bit about yourselves?

We are team born from the Free Association and play very much with the sensibilities of the FA. Some of us are actors/writers/comedians coupled with regular corporate jobs in order to pay the rent and buy nice jeans.

What style of improv do you guys do?

Our style is FA, UCB, finding the fun and game and adding a dash of our own take on making a funny scene. We’ve been playing together for about 18 months and know each other well which means we can throw in our individual foibles to our scenes.

How did the show come about?

We thought it would be fun to have our own night, inviting all the people we love watching.

Tell us a little bit about the show that are happening this week?

The show is a great mixture of accomplished comedy character acts and improv teams. Currently there are 4 acts in all – 2 character acts and 2 improv teams including Rhinoceros.

It’s a new year do you guys have any resolutions as a troupe?

New year’s resolutions would be “no farting in a group scene”.

What festivals are you guys planning on heading to this year?

We’d love to perform at the Edinburgh Festival – we are in talks and planning the bank robbery.

What advice would you give for people thinking about starting an improv troupe themselves?

If you’re considering starting an improv troupe, stop considering, get on and do it. You’ve got nothing to lose. It’s the best thing I ever did. I have a great team and 6 top new friends.

What is the best thing about a night at rhinoceros for the audience?

The best thing about coming to Rhinoceros’ Big Friday or any night we run, is that the quality of acts is high and you will be guaranteed a varied and exciting night of outstanding funny.

And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?

People should come and see Rhinoceros’ Big Friday because they’ll forget how much food they’ve eaten over Christmas.

QUICK FIRE ROUND

Strangest thing you’ve eaten?

Oysters. Weird, slimy, delicious, terrified I’ll be sick.

If you could trade lives with anyone for a day who would it be and why?

I’d like to trade places with Donald Trump so that I can resign as President.

If you could paint anything what would it be?

If I could paint anything it would be my flat, it desperately needs redecorating.

What is the most delightful word you can think of?

Most delightful word is ‘Jews’.

Your Favourite song?

Any Kate Bush song (really any one).

Who is your Comedy Hero?

Neil Simon (American playright), Cariad Lloyd. Pure talent which resonates.

Favourite movie quote?

It is s from Some Like It Hot:
Jack Lemon “You don’t understand Osgood, I’m a man.
Osgood “Well, nobody’s perfect”.

Favourite Cartoon character?

Favourite cartoon character is the Road Runner. He’s slapstick and violent and absurd.
A Coyote is repeatedly trying to catch and eat the Road Runner, a fast running ground bird, but the coyote never succeeds in catching him. Instead of his animal instincts the coyote uses absurdly complex contraptions to try and catch his prey which always comically “backfire” with the coyote getting hideously injured.
