It is a new year meaning that there is a whole fresh bunch of shows on the horizon waiting to be show of the week! We start off the year with a group that has lots of shows coming up and really made a name for themselves last year on the improv circuit. I caught up with Mariana to find out all about the show 20% Less are holding this week at The Miller on the 9th.
Hello Mariana, How did the show come about?
Word of Muff is our flagship show, which we started because we were tired of seeing comedy line-ups with only one woman on the schedule. We’re currently happy to see so many other female and/or feminine off centre shows happening, but still see the trend of only one woman featured on mixed bills, which means change is still needed!
Tell us a little bit about the show that are happening this week?
We have prepared a wonderful line-up of women that we’ll bring to Hoopla at The Miller who have kindly allowed us to use the venue for our January date. We have improv, stand-up, character and even a musical act.
It’s a new year do you guys have any resolutions as a troupe?
We want to play out more! We feel like we might have got lazy with our own spaces to play available and didn’t hunt down other promoters shows that much in 2018. We want all those spots in 2019! Book us!
What improv styles do you want to see more of this year and why?
We’re true fans of non narrative longform improv and that’s all we really want to see in improv. We’d love to see more experimentation, commitment and crazy ideas – we felt truly inspired by our time at #DCM20 in NY and think there’s so much not being explored here.
What festivals are you guys planning on heading to this year?
We have #DCM21 earmarked in our calendar and August is for the Edinburgh Fringe, all else we’ll probably try to attend as audience members, starting with the exciting VAULT Festival right around the corner!
What advice would you give for people thinking about starting an improv troupe themselves?
Don’t take it too seriously. Improv is good to keep your brain active and fast, your stage jitters in check and inspire you to do more. If you start taking it too seriously, all the joy of the craft will evaporate.
What is the best thing about a night at 20% less for the audience?
The laughter! That’s the only thing we guarantee! We pride ourselves for being great curators of comedy. Sometimes there’s cake and gifts, but we can’t promise that every time!
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
20% Less are on Facebook at @20PercentLess and on Twitter on @20Percent_Less and we share Instagram with our house owners C3? At @C3Something. Best way to know all about our shows you should follow us on all 3!
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Laughter. Comedy. Music.
QUICK FIRE ROUND
What is the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten?
If you could trade lives with anyone for a day who would it be and why?
Madonna, cause I’m curious.
If you could paint anything what would you paint?
What is the most delightful word you can think of?
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds’ Red Right Hand.
Who is your comedy hero and why?
I consume too much comedy to be able to pick one person out of the crowd – too many good eggs!
What is your favorite movie quote?
“yippee ki yay mother f*cker”
Who is your favorite cartoon character and why?
Daria Morgendorffer as the first cartoon character I thought had things in common with my teenage self.
